Confused about my Pre Op Diet

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

I asked my nurse what exactly do I need to do for a pre op diet. She said a low fat diet. Definitely the last week before surgery, but sooner the better. She said it helps with the fatty liver. I googled Fatty Liver and some say low fat, some are low carbs. On a low fat diet do I eat carbs like breads and potatoes? wouldn't that just turn into sugars and affect the liver more? Part of me wants to do some of the pre op diets that this board has done. Like a Protein shake for lunch and dinner and a sensible dinner. Any guidance? Should I just call and ask her what she means by low fat? But I know what "Low fat" is. Thanks !

That is odd that they didn't give you detailed instructions. Just have to ask - did they give you detailed instructions for your post-op diet? Because that's the most important. Normally the pre-op diet is an overall low calorie diet that's very low carb/high Protein. 1000 cals a day or so. But some surgeons don't require it, and your start weight is an important factor in how important it is. I would follow up and ask for more info - daily calorie goals, and guidance for protein, carbs and fat. I wish you the best with your surgery!

Please call and get clearer instructions. My surgery is 10/17 and my instruction sheet indicates I should drink 2 Protein Drinks (one for Breakfast & lunch) Jello or Popsicle as snack and dinner is 3oz Protein & veggies NO potatoes, bread or rice. Also no caffeine. Some people are on liquids only.

My program make us lose about 5-10% of our weight before surgery so the liver would be smaller on the day of operation. But I've seen other programs are different. But absolutely, tall to your doctor. If the nurse didn't help much, Doctor it is.

Thank you Ladies. I talked to my Drs Assistant and she confirmed it's a low fat diet. They are not worried about the carbs as they are the fat content.

Thanks again !

My program did Protein Shakes for 2 weeks before surgery. You can drink 4 Protein shakes (bariatric advantage brand) a day, plus zero cal clear fluids like sugar-free Jello, broth, sports drinks, etc. I found that I really needed something to chew on, so I had celery or pickles from time to time. I ended up losing 15lbs and had no complications during or after surgery. I don't think I would trust myself to stick to a "diet" that was so important pre-op. The shakes were easy to stick to, no confusion about what you can or can't eat. Maybe something to consider?

I agree using shakes and bars for at least part of your diet will help simplify things for you and should be quite effective.

I used the GNC Lean pre-made shakes (strawberry is the best flavor) and used the Atkins bars (Peanut Butter granola bars are delicious).

I used 5 shakes or bars each day and had a caeser salad with chicken breast (no croutons) every night for 2 weeks! Worked like a charm. Lost 7 pounds. :P

ps obvi caeser dressing is not exactly lowfat, but that is what worked for me. :P:)

I'm on day 3 pre-op. I was advised to intake Protein Shakes and Water only by the drs office. After speaking to my nutritionist today she said salad with vinegar or fresh cut vegetables only. Surgery date September 30. So excited. I met a young lady Monday that has successfully lost 180lbs. She looks like a model

Yeah, but I think everyone gets tired of them eventually anyways. My surgeon required us to use only Bariatric Advantage shakes pre-op. So, I guess it was exciting and novel to try other kinds :-)

Not really. I liked the GNC shakes a lot, the flavor was good but especially I liked them because they were thin (almost Water consistency).

The thing to remember is that after surgery you are doing liquids only for so long that pretty much anything with a flavor you like is going to taste pretty good.

Post op I've been switching up between the GNC and the Premier chocolate flavor pre-made shakes and then also using the powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury unflavored Protein in regular broth Soups.

I'm getting ready to start week 2 of three weeks of post op liquids. I will probably be sick of everything by the end of the three weeks!

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
