New to fifties group

Hi all, I joined this forum in 2011 anticipating surgery, but my employer's insurance would not approve, but then I came down with leukemia and that totally shot it out of the Water. But I am back and hope it will be happening before the end of the year, with Medicare since I had to stop working.

I am looking for anyone who has been sleeved or going to be for support and encouragement.

I hope some will pick this group to communicate with others.

I've been off grid for awhile. I was sleeved March 25, 2015 and I am down 125 lbs! Went from a size 24 to size 10...this was the best decision of my life! I moved from SE KS to Brooklyn, NY last month. I commute using mass transit which involves lots of walking and stairs. Could not have done it prior to surgery. Now it's a breeze.

@@LisaGB Congratulations!!! Sounds like your life has really turned around in so many directions. Living in NY is great for the walking. Enjoy your new life and body!!!!

Need some help. I haven't been on the forum for a while. I did great my first year got to goal was staying active and doing well. 4 months ago I hurt my back and have been very limited in my activity and in a fair amount of pain, in addition my life has been very stressful. I am now hungry all the time just like before.,I am eating too many carbs and grazing but I am having a hard time getting back on track. I have gained 12 lbs and am terrified I will keep gaining. Any advice,,suggestions or a kick in the behind will be appreciated

Hi traveler60 ! Good for you for coming back here! I had my tummy tuck surgery done 2 months ago and have not been to the gym and gained 4 lbs and so I too need to get back on track...we are both the same height...I am currently at 143 lbs...need to get back under 140. I am starting the 5:2 diet on Monday and finally going back to the gym today....please please don't let yourself gain any more....remember how good you must have felt at 140 lbs. Try the 5:2....it is only 2 days a week....just google it and you can see the details, but basically it's just eating 500 calories for 2 days a week. Let's do it together...my days are Mondays and Thursdays.

Thanks Queen. I'm in.,I'll start the 5:2 on Monday. I'm seeing a pain specialist on Tuesday, so hopefully they can do something for my back so I can start exercising again as well

Great....I'll check in on my first Fast Day in a while on Tues morning...should be your Monday still. We can do this! Good luck at the doctor.

Hi all, I had my pulmonary drs visit yesterday....need a note from him to clear me for surgery. Well he was hesitant saying I don't need weight loss surgery!

Why can't i do it the old way? Eat less and exercise and before you eat you get on the scale see what you weigh, then you won't eat much!

I was about ready to cry, didn't think he would clear me for wls.

Well he gave me a note, I'm stable at this time. Woo hoo! But he wants to see me again Nov 3, just before my surgery I have copd my lungs are pretty bad so here's praying they hold out for surgery!

I hate when non bariatric specialist insert their personal opinions... your pulmonary doc only need to address the issue with your lungs...unless there is a medical reason you should not have the surgery.. he should keep his personal opinion to himself..

I had the same problem with my primary docs office.

Just wanted to introduce myself. I am 51 years of age. I am a heart attack survivor with a RCA Stent. I presently am on my pre-op diet and my gastric sleeve surgery is scheduled for 6/14. I am very excited and nervous... What will life be like...

Hello and welcome! I hope you find this journey life-changing. Sounds like you are doing the right thing. No matter what our age, there's always time to get healthier.

Thank you so much! I will take any advice you can give. I live on Long island. Where do you live? I am presently on prep day of 14 days and I haven't lost a pound......

I am pre-op and also age 51. I live in Florida. I was diagnosed copd 2/7/16 and never picked up another cigarette. I was already 220 , but steroids pushed me higher to 242. Feeling empowered since I quit smoking, even though I still have high blood pressure, but now I want my body and my energy back. It is scary at this age, but I am hoping for a healthier life.

Welcom Kathy51!!! (and all the newbies!)/ Wow, 51 is YOUNG!!! I had my surgery at 58 (that was 5 years ago) and it completely gave me a new, healthy, vibrant life! Trust me, 50's is not old and after the surgery you will feel like you are in your 30's Good luck and congratulations on quitting smoking...well done! Just look at my photos on the back of my book....taken one year apart...exactly!

Exactly what I was hoping, to feel like my 30s again. Thanks for the positive response. I am feeling older than I am, and can't wait to feel young again. I'm ready to make the changes in my life too. I still feel I have a lot of living to do. I love reading about everyone's journey on here and I am so glad I found this.
