I have not told one person that I am going to have surgery. This is very personal to me and it is very emotional.

I'm doing it for me. I know I will see some weight loss from pre-op preparations, and will need to explain why I'm not eating much for lunch or out for drinks. The timing is pretty optimal as the occasions are at a minimum. Those in my life have seen me lose weight, they've seen me gain weight. I think some are totally rooting for me, and others expect me to fail (again).

And what they don't know, they cannot judge. I'm optimistic the results will speak for themselves.

I told close friends, co-workers and family members. I feel that in keeping this surgery a "secret" it shows that there is shame in having to have this surgery. People don't keep their knee and hip replacements a secret so why should we feel that we have too? We have this surgery to be healthly and get a better quality of life! I understand certain people are private, but I would never be dishonest to any person whom asked me how I was successful. You never know, you may be an inspiration for someone to start their journey!!

I had a friend who had a sleeve and had huge complications. But... She is an attention seeker too. She Didn't call her dr when she had problems. She didn't stick to her diet correctly, and made it into abHUGE drama.

So when I mentioned I was thinking about it, my friends all said " I wouldn't recommend it" ( based on ......?? Your experience?) or " look what happened to B***" or " I bet I could get that weight off you" and oh you don't look that bad.

Well, as my blood pressure climbed, my cholesterol soared, my blood sugar skyrocketed, I said " I don't want to die like my mother!"

I told a few people but after a while just said I was having hernia surgery.

Afterwords they all found out because I had to go to ER ( I used to work there)

My boss said oh are you having the same troubles as ****?

Um...... NO

So at this point if anyone says anything I'll just smile and say " thanks for your opinion"

I have been telling everyone I meet for the past 3 months! I just saw my gardener and he gave me a shout out on my countdown to Sept 16th and offered to take care of my garbage and pick up groceries until I can drive and pick things up.

All of my clients know because I have to close down my business for two weeks. My entire extended family is on board and I have a Facebook thread where 67 friends & Family "liked" my surgery announcement and then offered all kinds of support.

What is amazing to me is that folks seem really encouraging and truly interested in the whole deal. I am like a fun science experiment for my social circle!

I told God and everybody. I want accountability. I also don't want people asking over and over what I did. I am not a overly-sharing person. I did not put that on Facebook though, only people I see regularly. Facebook is only getting the results. :)

I am kind of in the middle on this. My close family know and are supportive. I have told a few people at work so I'm sure by now everyone knows. To be honest, I don't really give a rip what anyone other than my family thinks and they are excited for me. We live in bodies that are ripe for diabetes, heart disease an multiple cancers. No one questions heart bypass surgery so why should they question barbaric surgery. I think that it would be awesome if my journey could help someone else.

I am still pre op and I have only told my husband. I would like to keep it that way because I don't feel like I should have to explain anything about what I do with my body to others. I have no plans to ever tell my son because I think it would be too difficult for him to not let it slip out.

I completely understand. We didn't tell our children either. In our case as a blended family, there are ex's who would have no right to comment but would certainly do so from everything like money or their opinions however skewed ... to 4 sets of parents wit lots of different viewpoints. It was just so much simpler to keep it between us and not put anyone in a position that they felt they had to keep a secret. I wish I could tell my best friend, and I could, but it's a heavy responsibility to put on her to "not tell anyone". Mums just the word around here.

I have told some close friends, my family and 3 coworkers but not my bosses and the only thing I'm worried about is that I've only taken one week off work and if I have complications I don't know what I'll do. I'm working on Monday next week and my surgery's on Tuesday so I'm debating on telling them just in case.

I had my surgery on Wednesday and went back to work the following Tuesday without any problems. Assuming no complications, you should be fine. Good luck on your surgery!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
