Stupid weight loss advice

Recommended Posts

Increasing your thyroid med is very dangerous -- one side effect of hyperthyroidism (which is what you're putting your body into) is heart damage... Being hyperthyroid puts a lot of stress on the heart.

I've gotten a couple stupid pieces of advice: A friend recently, who is hypothyroid, mentioned she might take more than the usual dose of levothyroxine to speed up her metabolism, and I warned her not to do that as it could actually cause more issues with the thyroid (I'd actually rate this under the "dangerous" category, if there was one). The VA MOVE program told us to "eat less, exercise more" (because we've never heard this before, anywhere) and to "take the stairs at work" (look, if you're pushing 300 lbs and you take the stairs once or twice a day, it won't help, sorry. What might help is 30+ minutes per day, 4+ days per week on stairs, at your target heart rate, and not a minute less).

The stair idea is actually a good one. Back during one summer quarter in college (many years ago), I decided I was going to take the stair every day when I came back from classes to lose some weight and attract a girl. If I recall accurately, my room was on level 12. Anyways, so I took the stairs every day and it was hard every single time being around 300 #. However, by the end of the summer, I had lost 60 # from this stair climbing and eating a little better. And my legs were solid! I guess you could say that was at least once a day, sometimes more, for about 3 months. Take the stairs! Today, I still like taking the stairs, when I can, because they are more fun. There are different things you can do on stairs like 2 at a time, run, bounce, sprint, etc.

@moonlitestarbrite ...same here...my husband has cut out his carbonated beverages, along with me, and lost 20 pounds without even trying!!! He has/had a bit of a tummy, but not overweight... life is so unfair sometimes ;)

pleeeeeze girl... we weighed the same when we met, 160. he is 6'2". i am 5'2". he would complain to me... "i am at 175." waaaaa, waaa, waaaaa... i wanted to smack him, since i knew i was pushing 200. then i got up to my high weight 235 and he went gluten free (for health reasons) and lost 20 pounds in 2 weeks....

I cut out soda (regular and diet) several years ago. It didn't do a thing for me. (I was doubtful it would, considering I was already severely overweight).

my husband cut out soda pop and lost 17 pounds. but he's a guy. (and not seriously overweight)

Years ago I switched from regular soda to diet and lest 10 pounds. It was a loss, but so minor it realy didn't make a dent.

I cut out diet soda (and all imitation sugar (migraine triggers)) and ended up gaining 10 pounds. Small changes can make small adjustments. But the change has to be something you can do forever, not just till you reach your goal weight.

I was told by someone who was sitting there eating a poptart.

My husband and I both got referred to a kidney specialist because of blood tests that were a little "off." The doctor spent the entire visits telling us about how wonderful it is to cook in a crockpot, and how it is the best way to lose weight. Same conversation at every visit. We stopped seeing her. A few months later, my husband was diagnosed with kidney cancer by another doctor. Maybe if she hadn't been so obsessed with crockpot cooking...

Oh dear God... I have a very vivid imagination and now I need brain bleach...

Someone once told me to soak cotton balls in orange juice and swallow them. That the cotton balls would taste yummy going down, sit in my stomach like fluffy food and keep me full forever and I would never be hungry and I would lose tons of weight, super fast! Yeah... Riiight! :P

ROFL. That's a new one!

Actually, new research plus old research that was buried for many years says your mom is right. It's the carbs, not the fat. Take a look at Gary Taub's books Good Carbs Bad Carbs or Why We Get Fat. Journalistic discovery of all the research and studies over the years that did not agree with the low fat bandwagon. Nations around the world (like Sweden) are revising their nutritional guidelines as we speak.

I was low fat for decades, did nothing to keep me from gaining weight. Now I eat all the heavy cream and butter I want but keep my carbs very low and I maintain my weight very easily. Not to sound preachy, but the world is a-changing and everything we took for granted about nutrition since the 60's is being turned on its head.

The only time I ever lost any weight was on Atkins. I was what failed not the diet. I started eating refined foods again.

A former doctor told me "if you would just stop eating so much food, you would lose weight." Are you kidding me?

This was back in college. At that point I was eating between 1200 and 1500 calories a day, exercising like crazy, and walking to all of my classes on campus. I was about 100 lbs overweight at that point. And they had me on the depo shot for birthcontrol... I gained almost 20 lbs/year while I was on the depo shot, but the doc was saying it had nothing to do with being on the depo shot.

I was diagnosed with PCOS after I graduated from college and was at my first full-time job.

Years ago, a woman I worked with, told me to drink ice Water because is increases your metabolism by your body warming it up. WTF?

This happens to be true.

Your body expends energy/calories when it warms the ice Water up to body temperature in order to digest it.

Is true, in theory....but one will loose more weight in the winter because your body burns more calories keeping you warm

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
