Recommended Posts

Hello everyone!!! I am 4 1/2 months post op. At my heaviest I weighed in at 388 lbs. Today when I got on the scale I weighed 295 when on Monday I weighed 292.5 lbs. Over the last two weeks I have been depressed and eating when I am not hungry. Over the last few days I have gained 1.5 lbs. I am so afraid that I am goung back to my old ways. I try to tell myself to stop but the food is s9 comforting. I am trying my hardest to get through what is making me feel depressed. Please give me some ideas on what to do to get over this hump. I know i need to find some constructive things to do with my time other than eat. Please tell me ehat you do when you feel like you need to eat all day long.

Thank you

Aww being depressed sucks. I wouldn't panic over 1.5 lbs - that could just be Water you know. A gallon of Water weighs like 8 lbs. You definitely don't need the stress of panicking on top of being depressed so let that issue go for now. Perhaps changing what you are grazing on? Like sugar free Popsicles instead of Oreo Cookies? Yea, I know...just not the same.

They say exercise is great for depression. I always hated that saying lol. However, it is true. If you can just get out of the house for a bit, it might make you feel better. . I was thinking to make a themed photography sharing thread here - like "color blue". Then one can take a picture of something blue while on a walk (or wherever) and post it. Do you like photography? I am a point and click shooter myself - no skill involved - but I love themed stuff.

If you don't like photography ....Hey, I know - you can write a paper for me! I am so not looking forward to doing that. :D No? Ok, what else.

Um...well I like watching movies and tv online. We could make a thread where we watch the past oscar winning movies or something?

Audio book club? How about going through the classics?

Go to a craft store and take up a new hobby?

If you really feel depressed, please get help. Depression is a miserable hole that you can't muster up the energy to get out of by yourself. There's no need to suffer alone. Find a therapist or see a psych -- you needed help to lose the weight, you may need help to change how you're feeling.

Depression and eating are a dangerous combination and you don't want to stay there. Please seek out some help.

Thank you Travel for the pep talk. I realky like the idea of taking pictures on my daily walk. I am trying to find a new hobby that will get me active. That is what I really need. If you want to start that thread I would like to participate. Oh yeah, the answer to writing a paper for yoy is NOOOOO!!!! lol. Hope you have a wonderful day.

Congratulations on your weight loss so far. I believe I had a discussion with my nutritionist awhile back. Basically what she said is if you are going to eat a snack, try and eat one that has high Protein, it will help to control the hunger.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
