I am being "allowed" to purchase Optifast products from the program. I get to "enjoy" 5 shakes and 1 bar a day. Also I may have broth, diet Jello, Decaf. tea, diet pop and sugarfree popsicles. The liquid diet has not been really bad, just very costly. Shakes are $3.25 each bars are $2.35 each, a weeks worth of food ends up costing $130.20. But this is what is required, and I have lost 30+ lbs in 3 weeks. After surgery they would "like" you to buy their product, but you are not required to.

My Dr told me to lose btwn 5 and 10 pounds before surgery. I am not scheduled yet but I am trying to watch what I eat and it isn't easy this time of year. I am doing low carb.

Thanks for your reply. It is tough isn't it? It seems as though so many activities this time of year revolve around food. Maybe you can help me, I really wanna get a ticker but I do not know how to do it.

My doc didn't make me go on a pre-op diet, but he does make some patients go on a "liver diet". I think it is based on your bmi prior to surgery. I had my pre-op class last wed and one of the girls was on the "liver diet" she said she was miserable.

whats the liver diet exactly?

A diet designed to shrink your liver, such as a high-protein, low-carb diet or a liquid diet. The liver lays on top of the stomach and if it's especially large, it can make the entire procedure more difficult and recovery more painful. It's mainly an issue for people with higher BMIs. My BMI was 35 and my doctor wasn't concerned about my liver.

My doc did insist on a pre-op diet. His was totally liquid and was accross the board. There were 18 of us having it in one week there at the hospital. M FM BMI 30 or BMI 60, it was solid liqid diet for 1 week. I read where othere clinics use Atkins and that led to me cheating a little off the liquids, but i still lost 16 lbs.

Do NOT underestimate this!

I was on the pre-op diet for 17 days -- ONLY because my surgery date kept getting bumped back -- LONG UNPLEASANT STORY, that! Originally, I would have only been on it about 4 days!

Despite that, my liver was STILL so large and unweildy that the 20-30 minute procedure took over two hours! My surgeon was SO frustrated that he told my hubby in the waiting room that had I not been sent home TWICE before, he would have stopped the surgery and sent me home to lose more weight. But he didn't think he could do that to me after all I'd been through, so he kept trying and praying and finally, SUCCESS!!!

I felt so bad for him!!

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
