June 2007 Bandsters

Hi, I know that it seems ages away but my surgery is booked for June 1st (7 weeks tomorrow!!) and I just can't wait so I thought I'd start a June 2007 thread... anyone else out there due for surgery in June???

I started my pre-op diet (Optifast) last week... thought I'd try and lose as much as possible beforehand as I've kind of been doing the last super thing for most of this year! It's supprisingly OK... first 4 days were hell but hunger seems to have gone although I still struggle with the bordem (head hunger) a bit.

KT

being banded 1st June 2007 in New Zealand

Starting weight 101kg, BMI = 35

Current weight 97kg, BMI = 33.5 (after 10 days on Optifast)

Goal weight 65kg, BMI = 22

Wow - I don't log on for the weekend and it takes me an hour to catch up on all the posts! I am glad everyone is doing well that has joined Bandland!

This Pre-op diet is kicking my butt! :welldoneclap: I have not been perfect like my husband. I woke up yesterday light-headed, dizzy and with blurry vision. I had to get some carbs in me, so I had 3 chicken nuggets. We worked all day in the yard, so I had some ham and cheese with my protein shake for dinner, I just had to have something more substantial than liquids could offer. I have certainly eaten MUCH less than before this, but man it is hard and I am only 4 days in to the pre-op! To make matters worse it is PMS week! My husband just said "I am not saying anything if you have to eat something." He is good to me, but definitely enables my eating habits - which is why we are doing this together.

He saw the doc on Friday and is able to move to soft solid foods, since he is doing so well. That is fine and dandy, but I told him to PLEASE stop talking about food! We went to Wal-mart and he stood talking to 2 of his friends that work in the bakery for 10 minutes. I finally said - We need to leave NOW! He realized what the problem was and apologized.

He did start to say something like - well if the pre-op is so hard, how do you think rest of your life will be with the band. THAT is totally different - I don't have to live on liquids the rest of my life, just smaller portions of normal food. Deep down, I hope that is true. I don't want to fail at this!

Sorry for the long post - I needed to vent.

Hi Missy. I totally understand how hard that darn pre-op diet is!! It's a real butt kicker!!! I started my period the first day of my pre-op...I was NOT pleasant to be around! haha!

I'd advise letting your surgeon know just how weak and dizzy you get on this...perhaps he'd allow some extra lean protein...chicken or fish perhaps. Extra lean protein should still allow the liver to shrink, which is what the pre-op diet is for. I know it's hard to call your doc about this, because we've been programed by our docs to 'stick to your diet' and they don't want to hear any excuses, but bariatric surgeons know and understand our struggles. I think you'd get support and understanding :welldoneclap: Hang in there and let us know how you're doing :success1:

Hello everyone! I am new to this thread but hope it is okay that I join. I will be banded on June 28 by Dr. Marvin in Houston. I am so excited! So far I haven't heard anything about a pre-op diet. I am almost scared to ask about it. LOL My surgery is on a Thursday and I plan to go back to work on Monday. I sure hope I don't look 9 months pregnant like others have said! Good luck to everyone and keep up the good work!

thanks MM - I am doing better today. I am definitely CRABBY at home! I may give the surgeon a call to see what he says. My husband made all this look so easy - so that makes it even harder. Doing it together has good points and definite bad points - I told him he did NOT have the hormones that I do fighting against him. His is mostly mental, so it is totally different. I am proud of him though and want us both to succeed and to have our kids see us succeed - so I keep chugging along.

(((MMomma))) - Welcome home!!! :clap2: I hate you had to endure that but it is all over. We are here for ya! Thanks for the kind words - I'm a little anxious but ready.

Toni - I am so glad that you are doing so well. I want to be like you when I get banded. Ha!

Lisa H & HottyToddy - Go ya'll!! I am happy for you guys!

Tanderson, LisaMack, Huntersmom & Serena - I am sending up prayers for you ladies!

Pamla, Suzzie & Terranne - Congrats on your dates!

Dawn - Welcome to the June Bandsters!

Lucy - I'm glad that Barry was nothing serious now upward and onward with the band. Good luck!

Nina~

Welcome Angeladarling! Congrats on starting your journey to health. You have joined a very nice group of people.

Not every surgeon requires a pre-op diet. If yours doesn't, I would still suggest cutting back on fat and carbs. The reason for the diet is to shrink the liver to make surgery easier - but it also helps prepare you for the post-op diet.

Gas - also different for everyone. My husband was banded 1 1/2 ago - he did not have any problems with gas at all. I am wondering how much that has to do with how you are positioned in surgery. Our surgeon has the patients in lithotomy(stirrups) and sitting up some, I think that would help expel the gas after the procedure is complete (at least the gas they use to inflate the abdomen).

Missy,

Can I ask who is doing your surgery? I'm seeing WTLSC with Dr. Ellison...

P.S. Good to see another KC Area person on here.

Hi all!!!! I'm being banded June 7th!!!!

Yay! I'm on pre-op diet now but it's not as restrictive as some of you have described.....I get protein drinks; creamy soups (if they have no chunks in them) and any other liquids (barring sugar and fat!) Basically thick consistency liquids but eliminating sugar and high fat!

so.....It's going to take a while to read all the posts but I hope to...so I can get on the band wagon as well!!!!

Anxious to hear from everyone!

I just got home from my pre-op. I'm all set!!! One week from tomorrow. Startling news to me though - while we were reviewing my bloodwork we found out I am diabetic!!!! I've been tested roughly every 6 months for the last few years so I'm sure it's a new thing, but wowsers. This surgery came just in time!

Off to go do some reading on diabetes and maybe take a nap. The pre-op diet has left me soooo drained.

Michele

Hi all,

This is my first post. My operation date is June 23rd. I'm so so excited can't wait to get started. My doc never mentioned a pre op diet and reading this thread is the first i've heard of it. Since i've found out about the op date i've been eating anything i can get my hands on. Think i've actually put on weight! Its great to have support too, alot of people at home very againts the band. My mam thinks i'm crazy because of the money but i reckon she'll get it done too when she sees it working.

anyway thankyou all very much, this site is great!!!!!!!!!

There are actually several KC people here! My surgeon is Dr. Malley. When is your surgery?

Not sure yet...I've had all my preop done...so it would have to be this month unless they're going to redo the EKG and bloodwork. I am anxious to hear when. My BF had her surgery by Dr. Ellison earlier this year and is doing great.

I have my date....June 18! We are leaving on our wedding anniversary, so as far as anyone knows, we're on a getaway. I just booked the flights. I start my diet today. I'm having labs done at my docs tomorrow.

Good luck everyone!

Nope, I'm single. My 2 best friends know. One of them lives wayyy down in TX though, so that does me no good. Lol! My friend that lives here, she was going to be my driver, but now she is starting a new job and doesn't know if she'll be able to get the day off. She was so nice about it though and talked to her husband and HE will be driving me, and sitting around all day waiting for me to be done and then take me home. I have the best friends!

As for going back to work so soon... I have to work every other weekend. I work on an Oncology ward, so we don't usually have alot of heavy care patients. And I have a bad back (chronic since I was about 18 years old) so I was thinking if any lifting should come up for a few days (weeks?) I will complain about my back and get someone to do it for me. I don't like lying, but I don't want anyone to know about the band. I guess I'm fearful of failure and not actually losing weight with it? I don't want people looking at me everyday trying to figure out if I've gotten skinnier yet.

I know. I'm crazy.

Suzzie --I don't think you are crazy at all- a couple of girls at work have had the band -- everyone is always talking behind their backs-- she's eating an awful lot or she sur ehasn't lost enaything-- so I am not going to tell anyone anything-- if they ask what I'm doing to lose I'm just going to say I've cut down on my portions-- not actually a lie-- just not the WHOLE truth.
