June 2007 Bandsters

Recommended Posts

Suzzie I agree, that if you stayed over night it is only a deductable and it is covered. Lets see what the bills say.. we better be right!

Danielle/Oreo Hang in there one day at a time. I was able to have broth, popsicles and Jello. See if you can have those?

cmp I am sure the doctor told you to walk and get out to do that. I did not go anywhere except that until three days. Some folks on the thread ventured sooner and some later. Everyone is different. Go with how you feel!

Vicky I was banded on June 7. I was able to eat mushies a week later. however the list of foods was overwhelming and I had difficulty getting all the food groups in. My nurst told me to focus on 60g Protein and 64 oz of Water, then if I can add some vegies and fruit. I am less worried now. I have had cottage cheese w/ pinapple and cantelope, Soups, chicken salad, fish, tuna, yogurt. Does that help?

Missy thanks for the clarification, she must be pretty too!

Pippz WOW YOU ARE DOING GREAT!!!

HOLLY Great to hear from you so soon, we are proud of you!!!

Toni, how are you feeling?

Hi all. I'm back, banded and doing great. We got back late last night. Everything in TJ was fantastic. I felt like I got treated better than I deserved at the clinic by Dr. Ortiz and his staff (what honeys they are). There were 6 of us on the "ward" near the same age, and all I will say is what happens in TJ stays in TJ!! haha We had too much fun!

I ended up with the 10cc VG band, a hiatal hernia repair and some info on my liver (not good...fat infiltrated). I had trouble breathing when I woke up...pretty scary. I almost feel no difference, except when I get up and down. Hubby and I probably walked 5 miles the day after surgery, and I have kept that up. Other than buying way too many souvineers, I have no complaints! I'm looking forward to restriction! I have been having juices, broth (they had the best "Ortiz Tortilla soup" at the hotel restaurant), Protein & Water and smoothies when I can get them.

I wasn't told how much quantity I should have so I emailed the clinic.

I wasn't going to tell anyone about my band....privacy issues.....but I'm so happy I want to tell everyone! ::::lifting shirt to show my incisions::::
Whooooohoooooo!!!!

Well I went to my surgery follow-up appointment today, and everything is wonderful! The doc took my bandages off (thank goodness), and my incisions look great! He said the weight is coming off well and I made my first fill appointment for July 2nd. YIPPEE!

When I had my surgery, I didn't get pictures like everyone else did, so I was going to ask him about it, but he beat me to it. He had them for me...very interesting to look at a picture of your actual band on your own actual stomach! He also took a picture of my liver "because it was just so pretty". He's a goof! I really like him. But that was good news that my liver looked so good that he was impressed! LOL I don't know where I will put these pictures...they don't exactly go in the family album! But I want to do something with them...something appropriate will come to me.

I hope all are doing well today! If you haven't hugged someone and told them you love them yet today, you still have time! You'll make their day! (Or they will wonder what you are up to! LOL)

Take care all, Stef

Hello out there! I am getting banded tomorrow and am nervous about the ability to change habits after the surgery, the recovery time, etc. For those of you who were banded early in the month, how long until you wanted to be out with friends or out and about?

For me, I was only down a couple of days. Then I was out and about again doing whatever I wanted. Initially I hurt, so I wanted to stay in and down. Then when I started moving around, I realized it is true...get moving! If you get moving right away, you should feel better sooner. It has been two weeks since I was banded, and I'm going like crazy now! I still have pain in my side from where they stitch the port to the muscle, but the doc says that will get better, then worse at about 4 weeks, then should be completely gone in six weeks. So I will deal with it till then! I'm just so happy I did it, a little pain is expected and WORTH IT!

Good luck tomorrow! You will be naturally nervous, but it will literally be over and they will be kicking you out before you know it! You will do fine...keep coming here to check in, ask questions, and answer them for the others that come behind you.

See you on the losing side, Stef

Suzzie---I hate that you're having so much discomfort...I was banded on the 18th and used a pillow to support my stomach so that I could lie on my side and eventually stomach....Try a pillow..It may help

O2BThin---So glad to hear from YOU!!! We're band buddies and I have been eagerly checking the board to hear how you did....It's good to know you are doing well....5 miles???? WOW GO GIRL!!!

I had my surgery in Nashville on June 12. Thankfully, I have had no complications. I lost 39 pounds in the pre-op period. I think I have lost some more after surgery. I am still in that stage where I don't get as hungry as before the operation.

My best to all of you.

Terry (By the way I am a man. Back when I was named in 1949, girls weren't named Terry)

Well, it has been 2 weeks and one day since banding. Overall, I am feeling great. Haven't had stomach pain in quite a few days. I still don't know if I have all my energy back yet, but close.

I have been doing fine with the eating, and have not felt sick or felt like I have overeaten yet. I am in the mushies now, and really don't get all that hungry. I crave lots of things, but am not hungry. I have been keeping track of my calories the last few days, and it has been under 500 per day.

OK, now I am going to bitch. I have only lost 4 lbs. since the surgery. I did much better on the preop diet, lost 17 lbs in 2 weeks, plus, I was eating much more. I can't figure out why I can't loose. I read all these posts of people loosing 15 or more pounds. What am I doing wrong. Is anyone else having this problem. I feel like another poster said, that I may never loose weight no matter how little I eat. I go back to see the dr. for the first time on July 2. I will have a fill then also. I am sure hoping that I will have lose some more in the next week and a half. They will probably think I have really been cheating on the diet.

I HAVEN'T, I SWEAR.

Any way, glad to hear most all of you are doing good. I read these posts 4 times a day, and feel like I know you all.

I hope to hear from some of the June 1st banders when they have their first fill.

Good night to all.

For those of you who were banded early in the month, how long until you wanted to be out with friends or out and about?

Hi CMP....I healed fairly quickly and wanted to be out socializing within 5 days or so! I remember telling Musical Momma a few days after that I was in a restaurant having Soup. And lots of Junies are out walking *outside* the day of/after their surgeries! Gotta get that gas up and moving out! No worries...you'll be fine! :)

-----and for a few shout-outs!------

Lovlibabi---Good luck on Saturday. How cool is that that you're getting banded on a weekend!?!? I'll be thinking of you!

Pippz....your weight loss is amazing! Way to go! What's your secret?!? :biggrin1:

{{{{{{{ Nina }}}}}} You are a treasure! I loved your advice to BigSexy and couldn't have been said any sweeter!

Amcmh95----Good luck with your Pre-op diet! I really admire everyone who adheres to theirs for more than a week (I got lucky and mine was cut short). We're here for your support!!!!

Holli.....Glad to hear you're hangin' in! Like I said, p-a-m-p-e-r yourself, too!

{{{{{{{{ Suzzzie }}}}}}} I'm sorry you had such a tough go at work! :) I wish you could've stayed home a wee bit longer maybe? Not sure what you do for a living, but sounds like it was too taxing on you!!!! Let us know what your Dr. says, OK?!? :D

Howdy to all our M's! Musical Momma, Minty, and Missy!!!! Good to see you guys!

Hunter'sMom...I am with you on the first fill anticipation! Mine is Monday and it can't come soon enough!!!

Sweet Java! Thanks for asking how I'm doing....I feel better, but like someone beat me up a bit....my sides are sore from all the dry heaving. A nurse from my Dr.s office called today and told me not to worry, so that was comforting. How are YOU doing?

BB & Hotty...How are you tonight!?!?

Rhonda----good to read about your experience in Mexico!!! I'm so glad you had a great experience, sans the liver report.....

.....speaking of which, we can ask Stef how come hers is so lovely!?!? What's your secret, Stef???? :) I specifically asked the staff to let me know how mine "looked" after I woke up and after surgery they said it was fine, but I would've loved to have gotten your A++ report, Stef!

Hugs and Hellos to all I missed!!!!:biggrin1::):biggrin1:

Cheers,

Toni

Good night Joeygirl!

But if you see this before you doze off to sleepytown, I just wanted to let you know I think you're doing a GREAT job on your post-op diet. My weight loss has been slow, too, and I'm not eating sweets, etc. However, I AM getting more than 500 calories a day! Holy smokers!!!!! Your metabolism may be slowing down and you could lose muscle mass if you aren't careful. Make sure you get enough Protein each day with your mushies, OK?!?

BTW....I did have some Ben and Jerry's, but it was just to try Americone Dream. I had been waiting FOREVER to try it, and I'm not a huge icecream fan, but I do love Stephen Colbert! :)

Oh, and one more thing....your doctor's office is not going to kick you to the curb if you haven't lost X amount of pounds, so please don't worry yourself too much!!!!!

Hugs,

Toni

Hi all-

I am 10 days post op and have a few ?'s..................sorry if TMI, but my pee color has turned a real darker yellow almost orange...........I feel like I drink a ton of water/crystal light (much more than before surgery when I drank a bunch of soda)............shouldn't the pee be clearer?

And my bandages are finally off and so are steri=strips. I am left with the "stickiness" gooey stuff on my skin-scrubbing it does not get it off for me? What did you guys use? I feel so dirty!

Hi, everyone! I will be banded tomorrow and am really excited. I can't tell you all how much you have helped me get mentally prepared with all your posts. I'm sure I'll be logging in the next few days with questions and hope that soon I'll be able to be of support to others.

Stefanie, I have followed your posts carefully as we have the same doctor - glad to hear things went well with your check-up visit.

Good night (hope I get some sleep!)

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket. I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to. And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
