June 2007 Bandsters

Thanks for the support, everyone. I'm not really bothered by the obnoxious woman I ran into yesterday. It was really more shocking than anything else. I'm not going to let some hateful, childish woman make me feel bad.

How is everyone else doing?

Toni, I have the same concern -- I'm not telling anyone that I'm having surgery, I'm telling them that I'm taking 2 weeks of vacation. But some people are asking "where are you going? what are you doing?". And then my husband is taking a day off work to be with me at the hospital for the surgery and for some reason, he can't just say "I'm taking a personal day". He always feels like he needs to give a reason (which, by the way, it's illegal for your boss to ask you what you are doing with your vacation or personal time). I told him that if he couldn't just take the day off and keep his mouth shut, that he has to tell everyone that he is getting a colonoscopy. Ha!

Wow - I don't log on for the weekend and it takes me an hour to catch up on all the posts! I am glad everyone is doing well that has joined Bandland!

This Pre-op diet is kicking my butt! :welldoneclap: I have not been perfect like my husband. I woke up yesterday light-headed, dizzy and with blurry vision. I had to get some carbs in me, so I had 3 chicken nuggets. We worked all day in the yard, so I had some ham and cheese with my Protein Shake for dinner, I just had to have something more substantial than liquids could offer. I have certainly eaten MUCH less than before this, but man it is hard and I am only 4 days in to the pre-op! To make matters worse it is PMS week! My husband just said "I am not saying anything if you have to eat something." He is good to me, but definitely enables my eating habits - which is why we are doing this together.

He saw the doc on Friday and is able to move to soft solid foods, since he is doing so well. That is fine and dandy, but I told him to PLEASE stop talking about food! We went to Wal-mart and he stood talking to 2 of his friends that work in the bakery for 10 minutes. I finally said - We need to leave NOW! He realized what the problem was and apologized.

He did start to say something like - well if the pre-op is so hard, how do you think rest of your life will be with the band. THAT is totally different - I don't have to live on liquids the rest of my life, just smaller portions of normal food. Deep down, I hope that is true. I don't want to fail at this!

Sorry for the long post - I needed to vent.

Hi Missy. I totally understand how hard that darn pre-op diet is!! It's a real butt kicker!!! I started my period the first day of my pre-op...I was NOT pleasant to be around! haha!

I'd advise letting your surgeon know just how weak and dizzy you get on this...perhaps he'd allow some extra lean protein...chicken or fish perhaps. Extra lean Protein should still allow the liver to shrink, which is what the pre-op diet is for. I know it's hard to call your doc about this, because we've been programed by our docs to 'stick to your diet' and they don't want to hear any excuses, but bariatric surgeons know and understand our struggles. I think you'd get support and understanding :welldoneclap: Hang in there and let us know how you're doing :success1:

Hello everyone! I am new to this thread but hope it is okay that I join. I will be banded on June 28 by Dr. Marvin in Houston. I am so excited! So far I haven't heard anything about a pre-op diet. I am almost scared to ask about it. LOL My surgery is on a Thursday and I plan to go back to work on Monday. I sure hope I don't look 9 months pregnant like others have said! Good luck to everyone and keep up the good work!

thanks MM - I am doing better today. I am definitely CRABBY at home! I may give the surgeon a call to see what he says. My husband made all this look so easy - so that makes it even harder. Doing it together has good points and definite bad points - I told him he did NOT have the hormones that I do fighting against him. His is mostly mental, so it is totally different. I am proud of him though and want us both to succeed and to have our kids see us succeed - so I keep chugging along.

Welcome Angeladarling! Congrats on starting your journey to health. You have joined a very nice group of people.

Not every surgeon requires a pre-op diet. If yours doesn't, I would still suggest cutting back on fat and carbs. The reason for the diet is to shrink the liver to make surgery easier - but it also helps prepare you for the post-op diet.

Gas - also different for everyone. My husband was banded 1 1/2 ago - he did not have any problems with gas at all. I am wondering how much that has to do with how you are positioned in surgery. Our surgeon has the patients in lithotomy(stirrups) and sitting up some, I think that would help expel the gas after the procedure is complete (at least the gas they use to inflate the abdomen).

Missy,

Can I ask who is doing your surgery? I'm seeing WTLSC with Dr. Ellison...

P.S. Good to see another KC Area person on here.

Hi all!!!! I'm being banded June 7th!!!!

Yay! I'm on pre-op diet now but it's not as restrictive as some of you have described.....I get Protein drinks; creamy Soups (if they have no chunks in them) and any other liquids (barring sugar and fat!) Basically thick consistency liquids but eliminating sugar and high fat!

so.....It's going to take a while to read all the posts but I hope to...so I can get on the band wagon as well!!!!

Anxious to hear from everyone!

I just got home from my pre-op. I'm all set!!! One week from tomorrow. Startling news to me though - while we were reviewing my bloodwork we found out I am diabetic!!!! I've been tested roughly every 6 months for the last few years so I'm sure it's a new thing, but wowsers. This surgery came just in time!

Off to go do some reading on diabetes and maybe take a nap. The pre-op diet has left me soooo drained.

Michele

Hi all,

This is my first post. My operation date is June 23rd. I'm so so excited can't wait to get started. My doc never mentioned a pre op diet and reading this thread is the first i've heard of it. Since i've found out about the op date i've been eating anything i can get my hands on. Think i've actually put on weight! Its great to have support too, alot of people at home very againts the band. My mam thinks i'm crazy because of the money but i reckon she'll get it done too when she sees it working.

anyway thankyou all very much, this site is great!!!!!!!!!

There are actually several KC people here! My surgeon is Dr. Malley. When is your surgery?

Not sure yet...I've had all my preop done...so it would have to be this month unless they're going to redo the EKG and bloodwork. I am anxious to hear when. My BF had her surgery by Dr. Ellison earlier this year and is doing great.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
