April 16th role call - who's with me!

Hello I had surgery on 4/15 I started having some broth and it's giving me hearth burn Is anyone else taking any anti-acids?

My doctor prescribed 40 mg of Protonix (pantoprazole) to take daily for 3 months. Kaiser prescribes this short-term for sleeve patients and forever for bypass patients. It's to help prevent heartburn/gerd.

I am taking prilosec. Ive gotten heartburn really badly a few times so I just take it every day until I start eating something besides Clear Liquids. Hoping when I add actual foods that it will tone down some. But things like crystal light that normally didn't give me heartburn have set my chest on fire lately.

Thanks I took a Prilosec I had and it worked immediately :)

Just curious for all of you that have had some sort of food. When I'm drinking my Clear Liquids, I feel like I can sip all day. Just little sips, all day long and rarely get to the point where I feel I need to stop. When you all added food, did you get full a lot quicker? I'm assuming it's because the clear liquids basically just go right through and don't have to be digested at all. Was there a huge difference when you added Protein shakes or food? Just wondering if I'm the only one not feeling full or if it's just the liquids......

The first few days I felt full when drinking liquids but about 4 days later I was drinking liquids more easily and not feeling full anymore. And NO that doesnt mean your little pouch has stretched, its normal lol Now when it comes to food, like yogurt, Protein shake, cottage cheese...I do feel full after eating about 1/2 cup.

It will get easier each day. You will have yucky days and you will have great days!!

I also have started taking prilosec per surgeons orders. It seems to be helping a little but is heart burn and acid reflux the same thing? I know its a dumb question...actually no question is dumb here we are all new sleevers with a million questions lol

I will have to ask my Dr when I see him thursday.

I'm feeling great! Everything seems to be going smoothly. Some times I still get a discomfort at the larger incision site but don't need pain meds for it. Hope everyone is doing well.

Happy 2 weeks!

My surgeon put me on Prilosec as well for 3 months. I though all surgeons prescribe that to reduce all the acid & prevent ulcers.

Tangy,

How are you taking the prilosec? I haven't seen a chewable form yet. And the box I got says not to chew or crush.

I'm feeling better. Still weak and low on energy though. Also have trouble getting Protein in because I HATE those stupid shakes! I start on soft foods today, so hopefully it will be easier. I got a pintos and cheese from Taco Bell and was able to get down four (small) bites of it. I think the thing that is hardest for me is that my stomach is tiny but my brain still thinks it's like it used to be!

On another note - is anyone else SICK of fruit flavored Water? I don't care much for tea, so I've had to use the flavorings and there's nothing but fruity flavors. I want something that tastes like a Coke so bad I can't see straight!

1) height/weight starting our WLS programs - 5'8 1/2" - 375lbs (before week long liquid diet)

2) weight day if surgery - 357lbs

3) week 2 post-op pounds lost/gained - been holding steady at 334lbs :( I think my issue is that I'm not getting in enough protein/calories

4) total pounds lost since program began - 41lbs

5) current goal weight/ pounds to go - My first 'goal' is about 275lbs. I weighed 320 a couple of years ago and started on Weight Watchers. I ended up losing down to 279lbs, so I'd like to get about there. My ultimate goal is 180, but I'll be happy at anything under 200lbs. That means I have 59lbs to go to the first goal and 154lbs to the final one.

6) your biggest success this week - Working a full day. I work a desk job, but it's VERY stressful. food was my outlet. It's difficult without it!

7) your biggest struggle this week - Working a full day, LOL. Also, getting in my Protein and liquids. Also bummed that the scale hasn't gone down.

8) What is a new lifestyle change you incorporated this week? Eating solid foods SLOWLY. I didn't eat fast before, but I also didn't chew that much. It's difficult to chew until something is basically paste!

I take Prilosec every day. Supposed to for a few months. I just swallow the capsule. If you can find a compounding pharmacy, I believe they can make it into a liquid suspension for you if you're having trouble swallowing.

Even though I take the Prilosec daily, I've still had trouble with some reflux. My surgeon told me to take Zantac about an hour before bed and see if that helped. I've noticed that it does UNLESS I take any Tylenol. Seems that stuff just does not agree with my stomach. Unfortunately I have leg pain at night, so it's either sleep sitting up or not sleep at all.

During 1st week the nurse told me to mix with Jello or the night before next dose break capsules apart in a cup of Water & let it sit over night & drink in morning. Ewe terrible taste. Now I take capsule apart & dump in mouth & swallow w/ water. Wait a min then take the 2nd one. Works better for me this way.

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣
