June 2014 Sleevers Check In!

Recommended Posts

Hi there....my first check in here though I've posted elsewhere.

Sleeved on 6/17 and doing much better than I expected I would be. Pain is nill and no painkillers since the afternoon of 6/18. Trying to stay active with walking the first few days and hopped on my bike for a 10 mile ride today. Want to get metabolism going!

Diet is.yogurt, cottage cheese, protein shakes, and homemade broth. Trying to get at least 60 grams of Protein. liquids are Water, G2, and diluted apple juice. Might try some puréed food today and have been checking out recipes.< /p>

Wish I would have fpund this board pre-op...lots of great people and support here!

Cheers!

MIke 6/17/2014 OH

Haven't had a chance to check in lately, but had my '1 week' follow-up on 6/25 (8 days post surgery) and got a good report from the surgeon. Cleared to progress diet as tolerated and head back to the pool with the kids! Went back to work on 6/24 with no issues...I would have been very bored had I taken the suggested 4 weeks off (I did block my schedule for two weeks...just went in a week earlier).

Been ramping up activity with biked riding now. Did a nice 20 mile ride outside on Sunday and trying to get 10 miles on the spin bike every morning. Eager to start lifting weights and maintain some muscle tone, but that will wait a few weeks although I have no pain in abdomen or suture sites.

Good afternoon everyone!! How is everyone doing? This is my update: had sleeve done on June 2nd. Been doing great. I progress from puréed food to soft food on Sunday. I did a weight check today and I'm down to 188. I've lost 27 pounds since surgery so far. Total weight loss since beginning of bariatric program is 47 pounds. I get out and walk every day. Hoping to be able to start some toning exercises soon. Does anyone have any suggestions on what toning exercises I can do?

Also, congrats to all of us for taking this huge step toward better health

twinmommy, I'm waiting the two full weeks post-op on clear liquid. I'm glad I am--it's letting my tiny tummy heal while I learn how to sip and go slowly. My surgeon told me to do this for TWO WEEKS POST-OP so... I'm living on broth (recipe for killer broth posted this morning here), skim milk, and lotsa Water.

My surgeon told me that, with swelling for the first two-three weeks, the interior of my stomach is the width of a pencil. A pencil. Yikes.

I'm also 2 weeks post op liquid. But everyone is different with different instructions from their surgeon. I still have some tightness and pain if I drink too fast or it's to cold. The key is to do what's right for you!

No but I just had a very ripe fresh peach blended with SF peach yogurt. That was heaven. Banana would be good to.

i did blend in some frozen strawberries and blackberries today so I could get it down. I have been struggling the past few days so figured I would try it. Just made sure it was blended really well and no chunks.

I worried about eating anything with seeds while in the puréed stage so I have not eaten the gorgeous berries that are in season now. Glad to hear they went down ok for you. I blended a pot roast supper tonight! 1/2 oz was max. Full full full!

Yeah I've avoided berries too. I'm still in the 2 week liquid phase and banana is not on the list but my stomach is handling it ok

I added PB2 to my cream of Wheat this morning. It was a nice change. I was surprised how good the Peanut Butter taste was with this product. It was the first time I had tried it.

My surgery was 6/25 and was much easier than I had imagined. Gas discomfort is still around but it's slowly subsiding. Biggest challenge for me is the pill crushing. No matter what I mix the pills with, it's God awful. I'm hoping not to take any pain meds after today.. That will eliminate the pill crushing since I bought liquid Calcium and sublingual b-12, so that's a breeze. I'm on a liquid diet for the first week and then to stage II, I can't wait.

I was worried but blending it up most the seeds where at the bottom of my glass so didn't get to many in me. But I was able to finally get my full daily Protein in today.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
