May 2007 Banders

Recommended Posts

Eddie,

You are so right... Thank you. Hey, we were banded onthe same day!

Cool! How'd I miss that?? I swear, I don't know if it's the old age or the ADHD. Of course, I could just blame it on my kids - they are teenagers after all, and everything's their fault... :biggrin1:

I'm back to obeying the rules to see if the weight will start dropping again. Wish me luck! I have been on this plateau long enough! Something has gotta work. I walked about two miles today and just drank Water and Protein Shakes for the last two days. I so badly want a fill . . . . .don't know if I can wait till the 25th.

Hi guys! Now that I am feeling significantly better, the old head hunger is coming back. I am finding I can eat pretty much as much as I want too. There is no "knot" anymore like I felt at first, which made me stop. My 1st visit with Dr. Spivak is on the 21st, I hope, to get my fill. I guess the next two weeks are going to be a struggle. I was getting on the scales every single day when the weight was sliding off, but now I recognize the hunger is setting in, so I don't want to disappoint myself. I'll do it once a week...especially since I am only 3 pounds away from breaking into ONEDERLAND for the first time in about 12 years....My port area feels okay...no problems. My steri-strips have all fallen off, except for the port one (which is looking rpetty gray and dirty). I guess it's time to start the exercise program....

Any restriction I had is also now gone! Kind of frustrating even though I knew this was going to happen. It was so nice not being so hungry. I am getting my first fill on the 20th. I am going to the gym and trying to eat right but wish I could speed up time. This seems like a theme in my band journey. I hurry up and wait! Congratts on being so close to onderland! I am jealous!

So interesting read eveyone's progress! To the person who is eating only 800 calories a day and her nutritionist told her to eat less: ARE THEY INSANE???? You can't eat less or you will pass out! We need at least that to do the 30 minutes of cardio a day that is recommended! I'm eating about that much on the liquid phase and losing weight faster than I ever have in the past. If you go onto fitday.com and enter your info. they tell you how many calories you need to lose weight and it is always over 1000. Being thin is useless if you have no energy and are unhealthy. My office wants about 1200 per day once you go on solids. Eating at that rate plus daily exercise will get you down about 100 lbs. in a year- or to your goal if it's less than 100 lbs. That is what Dr. Miranda told me and I believe her. Why do some doctors think that they need to starve overweight people and get them thin so fast?? Any good weight loss book tells you other wise. You need to just put in your time with good eating habits, small meals and exercise!

I am also feeling better. This gas is out of control though. My family has gotten used to me walking around farting! I can't stand it but if I hold it in the pains are unbearable. I take Gas-X - what else can you do??? Anyone have their gas go away???

The other day I went for a power walk with a friend. I had eaten a cup of Soup about an hour before. About 45 minutes into the walk, the gas pains were so bad, I thought I was going to pass out! I got the sweats and everything. When this happens I lie on one side and then the other a few minutes and it releases. It rolls the air bubble through my intestines. Anyone else having this???

Sooooo sick of liquids but afraid to cheat. I've been making homemade Soups and broths to keep it at least a little interesting. There is a great veggie soup on the recipe section of this forum.

I want to start tracking calories. I downloaded CalorieKing for a 7 day trial but I don't like it because it does not let you build your own recipes and I think that the soups I am making are lower calorie than the canned equivalents. Anyone have a good tracking site. I hate fit day - it's so complicated the way you have to search for foods but it's better than Calorie King.

Good Luck Everyone!!!

I like using SparkPeople also. If they don't have a food in their database that fits, you just click on "enter a food not listed" and add it yourself. You can save frequently eaten foods to your "favorites". It takes me no time at all to track my calories there. Love it!

What's onderland?

That's when you go below the 200 lb. mark and onto the "one's".

I went for my first post op today. Nothing they can do for the port pain, I just have to try to heal without overdoing it. The good news is I am on mushies and I have lost 21 lbs since surgery!!! I am very excited!!! I just had an egg beater that tasted like heaven!!!

Carol....glad to hear you are doing so well. How much have you lost since surgery???

Since surgery on May 30, I have lost 17 pounds. Anyone else on strict full liquids for 6 weeks after surgery?

cmacinga...

I was banded on the 24th...my doc says clears liquids only for 4 weeks, then mushies for 2 then soft. We never do go on full liquids. I asked the nutrition gal at the doc's ofice and she said they took out the full liquid stage because people were taking in too many calories on full liquids (creamed Soups & such), being that you don't have any restriction yet. I talked with the Nutritionist (Phd) and she felt 4 weeks clear was too long. I did 2 weeks clear pre and 1 week clear post then added 1-2 serviding a day of a thick Soup (ususally split pea...but no creamed soups) and my digestive system is much happier now :)

I sure am looking forward to mushies...never thought I'd day that...LOL

Hello Everyone.

I feel guilty posting my results to you because I did not have any pain, did not need to take any pain medication, and have lost almost 30 pounds so far. Carol

Good for you Carol! I too had what I consider an easy ride. I did take my pain meds, more as a preventive than as a reaction to pain. I've had minor gas, very little soreness and no problem whatsoever getting comfortable in bed and sleeping on my side from day one. I consider myself blessed, especially considering my age. So many people so much younger than me appear to have had a rough time of it....or....is it just that us old folks are more acclimated to "pain and discomfort" as a way of life now and we don't sweat the "small stuff"....(could be that too)...our bodies may be "breaking down" but we're used to it by now....second nature...so we don't expect much (?)....anyway, short of saying this was a cakewalk, it has really been quite a non-issue, and I am most thankful. Now waiting for my first fill in a week and a half and getting back on the losing bandwagon. I am not jumping on the scales in anticipation anymore because I recognize my hunger is up now. I'll just let it ride. I also don't find that this is much "hell" right now. I ignore the "beast" until it growls and then I feed it to appease it and it goes back into hibernation for a few hours....

Good for you Carol!! You are the model bandster!! 6 weeks are tough, I barely made it through 3! I just felt my first stuck/slime. I ate a small piece of canned pears, I guess I did not chew enough and what an awful feeling in my chest!!! It only lasted for a minute but my goodness. I cannot believe people are talking fills already! I think I am safer with full liquids!!! I will be afraid to eat again. I guess that is just the band working......

Best of luck

I had my first post op today and have been advanced to pureed or mushies diet. Cream of wheat has never tasted so good! One week of mushies and I can then advance to soft foods. Hopefully, the worst is behind me. I lost 17 lbs in 10 days but now I really have to be careful of what I eat. I dont want to back pedal. I hope I can be strong!:)

Hello All!

Just caught up on all the posts! Glad to hear most are doing well.

I have been on soft food for 3 days now - who'd thought tuna and

chicken salad would be the best things I ever ate! The first day or

two I ate too fast and experienced the awful golfball in the esophagus

feeling twice. Okay, lesson learned. Won't do that again! Just felt

stuffed and bloated for two days, but today was much better. Cheated

today and had an ice cream cone - first time since August. It was

93 degrees here in NJ today and that ice cream just hit the spot! But,

I'm back on track now.

The hardest thing for me has been not drinking Water or iced tea with

my meals. Always been a way of life, but now I am trying to be very

aware and drink up before I start eating. If there is anything left in

the glass, it's hard not to reach for it, but I'm sure it's just a matter of

re-training myself. Or maybe I could have friends and family just slap

me when I reach for the glass!! Wouldn't they love that?! LOL

Welcome to the newcomers to the a-MAY-zing bandster group!

Glad you found us.

Cheers to all!

Margaret

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
