Medication Post-Surgery

Recommended Posts

I just got my surgery date- April 1- and I'm wondering what you guys did to take medicines post-op. How long did you all need to crush pills? I'm not looking forward to taking some of my medicines crushed.

Most of the medication post op is in liquid, chewable or bilingual form....I hear that some people crush pain meds(those who were not prescribed liquid) but it's solely at the discretion of your surgeon as to what medication you take for the 1st 6wks. Best wishes to you

Post-Op I was prescribed liquid Lortab, however; I take a number of other medications I haven't had any problems swallowing them. I have a couple huge pills and I just break them in half and make sure I take drink then drink with the pill while I swallow it and then drink some more. It's kinda become OCD for me. The only problem you would run into would be if you were on some kind of extended release medication. It's always best to talk to your surgeon and get his opinion on how you should take your medication.

BTW. CONGRATULATIONS on your surgery date! Woo HOO!

I received liquid pain meds also. Luckily post op I no longer had to take 5 meds. So only two pills I need to empty or crush. One for ulcers in the remnant and the other for the gallbladder. But I only have to take those the first six months.

I was never told to crush or take liquid meds. I took all my pills from the beginning. My doc said if they are smaller than an eraser on a pencil, they were fine. Even capsules worked out fine.

Thanks all for your responses. I'm seeing my psychiatrist later this week to change over my prescriptions. He wants me to do liquids or crushed immediate release for a month at least. This is actually the thing that I'm looking forward to least as liquid medicines and bitter tastes tend to make me gag. Of course, if this is my biggest challenge, I'll count myself lucky.

I had to crush everything. I mixed it in applesauce or yogurt (of course, at that time I could barely eat a tsp.)

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
