Question for all of you, I just started my pre-op diet today. I am currently taking prilosec (for acid reflux), synthroid (for my thyroid), a diuretic and cholesterol meds. And Vitamins. What meds are you able to get rid of after surgery and how soon after? I was also taking phentermine, but I stopped a couple of weeks ago because I heard you should be of them awhile before surgery.

It might not be immediate but your need for some meds will lessen. I am off Metformin and a BP med. We have taken Prilosec since surgery. We are off the diuretics because of the possibility of dehydration. Our Internist will re-eval in about two months. Best wishes!

Any Vitamins or supplements should be stopped also now. They don't know how anesthesia affects the body with supplements. As far as the other things you may not be able to get off your thyroid medication. Usually with acid reflux medication they want you to take it for a month after surgery then stop.

I love your advice all the time. Thank you

I always say, when on doubt call your doctor. That is why they are there.

Definitely stop the Vitamins if your pre-op diet requires you to drink Protein shakes. The shakes are full of Vitamins so you'll be getting a double dose if you take a Vitamin on top of that. My surgeon didn't require me to stop taking my thyroid medication or my blood pressure medication, ever. They even gave it to me in the hospital still after surgery. I was instructed to stop taking NSAIDs (like ibuprofen and aspirin) at least 7 days before surgery. They also gave me a long list of meds to stop taking 7 days before surgery but I can't recall any of them specifically. As for post op, my primary care doc said I should be able to get off the blood pressure meds within the next month and my thyroid medication may need a dosage adjustment as I start to lose weight so I'll have to get regular blood draws (like every 3-6 months). Best of luck to you on your journey!! :)

Thank you all. I will call my surgeons office tomorrow and all about the Vitamins. I take a multi Vitamin, caltrate w/ Vitamin D and an extra 5,000 iu vitamin d. I've been on all the since my hysterectomy a couple of years ago, and without the vitamin d I will hurt. I pretty much figured the thyroid was here to stay, but figured the cholesterol and acid reflux meds could go at some point.

This is my first post and luckily I stopped here! I'm getting my surgery in two weeks and was told to do liquids for four days prior. However, I decided to do mostly liquids and some other things like tuna and yogurt for an extra 10 days before. The point is that I was planning to take phentermine to make it easier for the first 7-10 days of the pre op diet. Does anyone have any more info on refraining before surgery?

I use unjury shakes and they don't have hardly any vitamins and minerals. I did my children's chewables during my preop diet.

I did my blood work yesterday and the nurse told me she was glad I knew to stop the phentermine, but she didn't know why I would need to stop the Vitamins. I'm still going to check with the surgeon on that though.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
