Anyone else have trouble with protein intake?

Recommended Posts

hi, I just had my surgery on feb 18th and I am having trouble increasing my Protein intake, I have been doing the thinned yogurts, skim milk, protein shakes/mixes, but it doesn't seem like I am reaching my doctors goal of 60-70 grams per day. When I drink anything, it seems like I am only drinking 1 to 2 ounces at a time, maybe not even that. I do feel tired all the time but the doctor said it was normal because of the diet I am on. Does anyone have any advice or suggestions that may help "up" my intake??

You also feel that way because you just had surgery!!! Keep on drinking, as much as you can tolerate, as often as you can... you need to keep fluids in, especially water/liquids... so the Protein shakes help, as well as FLUIDS FLUIDS FLUIDS... right now you still have to heal from surgery... you'll get there!

For the first few weeks, fluids trump Protein intake. Keep your focus on drinking. Before you know it, you'll be eating at your new normal.

Yes indeed...fluid trumps your Protein intake during the first few weeks.

As mentioned in the above posts..their is no way you can intake the amount of Protein that was suggested. You will eventually get to that point , in time. It took me about 6 weeks to get to my target protein gram count. For the first 3 weeks I could not hardly drink Protein Drinks. So just do what you can .. And not get worried about this .. U r doing just fine. And p.s. Get your Water in.

Does drinking the Unjury chicken broth with Water count as part of Fluid intake? I am having problem with drinking 64 oz fluid, feel bloated after a few sips (surgery 2/24/14). I have been walking more, but it seems as soon as I drink anything I still feel bloated. Any suggestions appreciated.

According to my doc, immediately after surgery, any and all liquids added up to be your fluid intake.

I agree with the other comments about Protein intake. My guidelines were minimum 45 grams of protein and 48 oz of fluid. The schedule the first 3 weeks was 4 ounces of Protein Shake on the even hours and 4 ounces of liquid on the odd hours, 8am to 10pm.

Thanks mac man- that's a great way for me to think about getting it all in versus relying on my "hunger " cues..which are out of whack!!

I had surgery the same day. All I'm supposed to worry about is staying hydrated until my 2 week post op visit when I'm cleared for advancing my diet to puréed foods.

I tried Protein shakes and I gag. Literally. And the smell of the unflavored gags me. The only Protein I'm getting for the moment is from Greek yogurts and my doc says to just stay hydrated for now. If it weren't for cream of chicken Soup, sf puddings and Greek yogurt I'd starve. Lol

I had my surgery on 2/18 in Michigan! I am having the same issues with protein intake. The shakes make me so nauseous! I have to force myself to drink half of what my doctors require. I am jut trying to get as much Fluid as I can.

I had surgery 2/18 as well. I'm having the same trouble- the Protein Shakes make me sick post op. I have been using Unjury chicken Soup Protein mix and they have 21g per serving. I try to have a couple each day. They are very good -no smell, no bad taste ...just like chicken broth. You may want to try that...?? I also chewed the heck out of a cheese stick for some protein there too..( not sanctioned, but I was dying for food & it went down ok ). Good luck- this is tough but worth it!!

I had surgery in California and I just talked to my nut yesterday and asked her the same question! Her answer surprised me because she said I never told you a specific # of Protein grams! She said I must have read that on the internet and what their program requires is 1/4 cup of lean protein 3 times a day that's it! No counting or snacking to try to reach a protein goal. She even said that 60 grams is a lofty goal for any one ! Anyway I was relieved. So anyway I wouldn't worry too much about it until you are a little further out. Of course I think the more protein the better but at least I know nothing bad is gonna happen to me if I don't eat that much .

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
