Here's my take on hair falling out. I don't believe it is a result of WLS or diet related (if you are getting in all your dailys). My sense is hair falling out is a consequence from having had anesthesia, which stops everything in your body (including the Hair growth cycle) temporarily. I say this because I experienced Hair loss following ankle surgery as well as following WLS. When I brought it up with the orthopedic surgeon, he told me all patients who have had anesthesia will notice their hair falling out for a couple of months following the surgery--whatever the surgery.

I'm interested to read if anyone else who has had a general anesthesia for a non-WLS operation had hair loss as well.

In any case, the loss will not be forever. I lost hair from month 2 through about month 7 post op, (no big deal for me because I have masses of hair). It stopped after that. I did have to buy a lot of Drano, however :)

I was told by my NUT that this common problem was due to the anesthesia, but I didn't believe her until I had a second procedure done and had hair loss again about four months after the surgery. Please don't buy any products that claim to help Hair loss. They will not help. Ride it out. It wont last long.

Me too, about a month ago I was losing all kinds of hair. It seems to have calmed down now. My nurse said it may be the anesthesia too.

This is why Protein is important. You are not losing hair because of anesthesia you are losing hair because of weight loss and not getting the proper nutrition. All of us lose hair after WLS. Get in more Protein and take your Vitamins.

Sibparaz - my best suggestion is, go pick up a bottle of Biotin - 5,000 mg. Take one every day. I can't say enough about it... No matter what the cause of the Hair loss (I've had many cycles of it over the past few years), Biotin STOPS it from falling out. I don't know that it stimulates actual growth, but it really helps to keep your hair on your head :) I just picked up a bottle made by Natrol, which dissolves in your mouth.

I started losing my hair about three months after surgery and another three months later, I really started to notice how thin it was getting. It was awful and I know how you feel It was at that time I started taking Biotin and uppped my Protein per my doctor's instructions. All summer long, I waited for it to grow back but all that happened was that the Hair loss seemed to slow down.

Then I had the hip replacement surgery and oh boy, did the hair start to come out again. In handfuls as a matter of fact. A month after the surgery, I swear I looked like my grandma...I could see scalp easily and I was horrified. But...I can say that I noticed about six weeks ago that it was really starting to come back and now, you can't see any scalp at all. Oh...and I'm wearing my hair shorter these days. It's a better style and now that I'm so much smaller, I don't need as much hair on my head anyway. Hang in there...as the other posters have said, it will get better.

I have been under anesthesia several times to include open heart surgery and have never experienced Hair loss. I am a little two months out and will be interested to see if I experience hair loss.

I've had 4 major surgeries requiring general anesthesia. Never had a problem with Hair loss. I am almost to my 3 year anniversary of my band. The past year or so I have experience a ton of hair loss. It is insane the amount of hair I lose. It is every where in my house. I've gotten pretty serious again about my Protein and also went to a homeopathic doc who found I am mineral deficient and perhaps have a weak thyroid so I just started taking those supplements.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
