Is there any foods that you totally miss?

Recommended Posts

We all know what we are allowed to eat & what we should stay away from - this is supposed to be a fun thread! Some of us have to stay away from certain foods because you have visions of it in your sleep & if you start eating it you know you just couldn't stop (lol) - so, is there any food that you miss?

I love love love food - hence why I was the chubby girl. But this is a list of food that I love and can't eat because I just know I couldn't stop: Lasagna; Hot bread; Spaghetti; pizza - New York style oozing with cheese (lol); Mac n cheese; Cheese doodles; Juicy cheeseburger with a bun; Baked ziti; Shortbread cookies; Girl Scout Cookies

I miss cheap white sheet cake--birthday, or wedding variety. My nemesis!

(And to think I live in a land of the best pastries available...and still, my favorite sweet is that cheap cake from Safeway.)

I miss my favorite...Hot wings dripping with hot sauce! Now I know that I can still have them BUT I'm so cheap that I refuse to buy six wings when I can only eat one, two at the most. I'm thinking about going to my favorite place and telling them my story and asking if I can buy a child's portion. I also miss the occasional Five Guys burger but I would only buy that about once every six months anyway but that was usually when I was treating myself. Luckily I was never a "sweets" person. I can truely say that being a recovering "sodaholic", I'm really blessed NOT to miss sodas. Haven't even been tempted. That alone makes my surgery worth it...LOL!

Cheez-Its...stuff is like heroin to me. I have not had it in two years and it remains the only thing I avoid in fear that it may get a grip on me again. I had a 1pound box a day habit. I would make special trips to the store just for Cheez-its if I had to.

I would like to think at this point I could have serving and put the box away but I don't trust myself and of course Cheez-Its are slider food.

I do miss Guinness ale from time to time especially around St Patty's day.

Many foods mentioned above I can eat...beer, cake, etc.......I take it the question is what foods you are not able to eat because you're dieting? Or foods you cannot eat because the band will not allow you to.....

On the latter....I cannot eat red meat anymore....the band will not let me....I miss a big juicy steak right off the grill.......also ribs, pork chops, etc...also a big burger on a fresh roll with lots of onions, don't forget the French fries..also not band friendly.......

Many times my wife will order a beautiful steak and I am tempted to reach across the table and snatch a bite.....but I know what will happen if I do....learned the hard way what to stay away from....

One hand I miss these foods...on the other I am thankful for what I am today by not eating them....so I get over it....

Onion rings! Sometimes I will ask others to buy them, so I can have 1. Sometimes, when I buy fries from Burger King for others, there will be one in the bag, I get it!

Ice Cream... I love all flavors.. I have bought some skinny cow chocolate truffle bars.. that are pretty darn good but I can get addicted to them also so I don't buy them very often. Otherwise I can eat most anything just don't eat much bread at all and stay away from Pasta.

I'm still of the mindset that I can have most anything -- I am a restricter and don't want to do the deprivation thing. If I allow myself cake, for example, then I can ask myself, "do I really want it" and come up with "no, not really" whereas if I tell myself I cannot have it then I want to do it out of spite or something. That's a synopsis of my last twenty years, actually. But having stuff in the house is another matter entirely. Peanut Butter, for example -- a jar of that on the house would be like crack to me. I love peanut butter!

Foods my band doesn't want (so far, maybe more coming) - rice, bread, rubbery mushrooms, etc. But I don't long for any of those things.

Wine & cheese & bread & chocolate -- I like to think it was fun while it lasted but it wasn't even that fun. I always just seemed to want more, more, more.....

I can eat almost everything mentioned, though like B52, I've chosen not to eat most of it.

The thing that I miss the most is a nice juicy blue steak. I have great difficulty with steaks now.

Honestly, I would also love to be able to enjoy a binge on Chinese food or a big plate of spagetti and meatballs. Spagetti was my FAVORITE meal pre-banding. I have had it since being banded but not in the 'stuff your face until your full' way. LOL

Yes, Thank God for my band!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
