Post-Fill Diet ?

Recommended Posts

This is my 5th or 6th fill and I always have the same question: Does your doctor tell you Clear liquids or just liquids and for how long? My doctor's post-fill instructions are the same as after my initial lap band instructions. Therefore, I seem to try to survey others to see their instructions.

I am going to stick with Clear Liquids, today (day 1). Then tomorrow (day 2) regular liquids. For day 3 I was thinking liquids in the morning and gradually increase to yogurt, etc. at night.

Mine tells me to just stay with any kind of liquids for 24 hours, and I'm good.

I hope that is the consensus! I feel like I have the only dr in the world that states CLEAR liquids. I even asked today if I could have a little milk in my Decaf coffee and was told NO.

My instructions are LIQUIDS first day ( and they give examples, like Proteins shakes, Soups, broths, juice) and SOFT/MUSHIES the day after

( mashed potatoes, puddings, yogurt)..,.. My family knows I like this day bc it is the rare time I order mashed potatoes and don't feel guilt. Third day, back to regular diet.

Mine is full liquids the rest of the day and the next day then back to regular the third day. Seems a little weird so I do mushies the evening of the second day and then just be careful from then on.

I have no post-fill protocol, just a "take it easy." I've been considering going all liquids for a few days here and there. I know some long-term banders do this and it appeals to me. I've been thinking about getting my juicer out. Hmmmm.....maybe this is the weekend to get that together. I can pretend I had another fill and have absolutely no cravings for anything, no desire to eat even when stressed, etc.

The reason for liquids is that the stoma swells after a fill. Most doctors require clear liquids for at least 24 hours.

My doctor instructs me to stay on the mushie phase for 3 days, yogurt, Soups, Protein shakes, refried Beans pureed etc. Basically he's told me just don't chew...LOL

2 days liquids , then mushies for a day then back to solids , at least that is what my Doctor surgeon says to me.

The rule of thumb is to follow your own surgeons rules. Even if they are different than everyone else's surgeons rules for a fill. Mine is liquid for the reminder is the day after the fill ( which includes cream soup) then 1 day of mushies then resume regular food. However after my last fill it took longer to get regular food to go down without a pb episode so I did mushies for about 4 days BC I got stuck a lot at first. Once the swelling cleared out I was able to eat regular food again.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
