Yes the caffeine acts as a stimulate and could make you hungry. Also in the early part of your healing it could irritate your new pouch. Also they say caffeine acts as a diuretic. So we don't want to get dehydrated when we are already having trouble getting our fluids in. I will admit that I am a diet coke aholic. Lol. And I do allow myself one a day.

Wait you drink soda still?! I thought that was like pouch explosion risk?

Depends on your doc. Go by what YOUR doc allows. Many of you get yogurt and Protein, I get only clear broth, coffee, tea, soda after carbonation is out. My doc says dairy is worse for a new pouch than caffeine. . But if your one to dehydrate then he might would take you off.

I don't think so. I was never told that. They just said that the carbonation could make me very uncomfortable in the beginning. Right out of surgery I had my husband get me a sprite and I took the smallest baby sips. It was fantastic. Yes it did cause a little of discomfort but burping helped. After I was discharged I would let the soft drinks go a little flat before I would drink them to help with the discomfort. Now I can just drink them with no problem.

I dont understand why you would go through the surgery to go back to drinking pop with all that sugar. That really confuses me why.

Honeymoons Over!

Got my first piece of food stuck... Agh, a Rite of Passage I fear. I believe I experienced the "PB" and bubbles, foam, suds whathaveyou etc. I feel I should be seasoned enough to know now to SLOW DOWN!!! I knew it was risky, I felt that driving, panicky, hunger feeling that has plagued me... I even ignored the warning bells- the hiccups, and thought to myself alright this isn't going to work right now. But, did I refrain from eating the delicious bean and ham Soup I've been cooking for 24 hours to perfection? NO!!! Regrets? Yes, I have a few.

Feeling better now sipping Water and relaxing. Learning as I go... ALWAYS the hard way. ;)

I don't drink anything that is not diet. I only allow myself one of those a day. The rest of my Fluid intake is Protein Drinks and Water. Except right now I do have this unusual craving for orange juice and oranges. Thanks for watching out for me. I could never do anything to ruin this blessing of this surgery.

My aunt is 12 years post op rny and drinks a diet soda every day and she has maintained her goal weight. The reason they don't want you too is because carbonation can cause discomfort and "stretch" your pouch, also aspartame in diet sodas actually increase appetite and like someone mentioned is a diuretic. However i don't think having a diet soda will kill you!

I think it's the caffeine carbonation and other stimulates in the cokes! My handy dandy book from my dr office said if it is an absolute must to have a carbonated beverage let it go flat then drink it.

Changing subjects here but I found a pb and j jelly muffin for rny people and it sounds sooo good!

I am scared to eat nuts. I have been missing salt inn my lifestyle and found something to help me. cheese chips. I can season the cheese (no salt as cheese is salty) with different spices and then make small mounds (shredded cheese) on parchment paper and bake. They are the bomb that has Protein. A little high protein bean dip and whalah a little snack.< /p>

How long and at whats temp do you bake the cheese?

Hello!

I just joined this site today, and am still trying to learn how to use it. I had my (gastric bypass) surgery Dec. 9, 2013. So far I have had very few problems. Recently, I started having some pain on my right side. Anyone else experience this? It is almost like a side ache, but not too over powering. My biggest post-op struggles have been waiting 30 minutes before and after eating to drink anything, and getting in all my Protein. I am also discovering that while my body is physically limited (by the surgery) my mind is the same as it has always been; thus, I am dealing with the same cravings and desires (to overeat, eat out of boredom, and emotional eating) that got me obese in the first place. I have been looking for books to read that deal with some of the emotional baggage I am still toting when it comes to eating. I just recently got the clearance to exercise, and I am considering joining my local YMCA. I have read (and heard) about people who have weight loss surgery and then gain their weight back after some time. For me, I have allowed these stories to put a tremendous amount of pressure on my success…pressure I really don't need.

Well, that is sufficient for my introduction. I look forward to getting to know you all better! Thanks for listening to me ramble!

Sara

Possibly gall bladder pain? Do you still have yours? Talk to your doctor or his office. When I left the hospital I was concerned about how to tell the difference between a gall bladder attack and pain from complications if they were to occur (I had gallstones). He said left side pain is most common for gastric bypass pain or complications as that was where most of the surgical work occurred. Right side pain is more commonly associated with gall bladder attacks, and can range from mild to severe. And just to really keep you guessing, if your surgery was in the last couple days to a week it could be gas pains. :-)

Soup is the last thing I want to eat! I would rather have my strawberry Protein Shake . I am going to have to look up some recipes to get my Protein in.

Check out the website 'The World According to Egg face'. She has a LOT of recipes for Protein Shakes that sound awesome. :-)

It's not that I don't love to cook and take care of my family. When I was working as a nurse working horrendous hours, I would still come home and cook for them. Actually my family has been pushing me for a couple years now to open my own restaurant. I don't cook by recipes or anything like that. I just get an idea in my head and put it together and I know when it is right by the way it smells. That is one of my problems. I don't want to smell food right now. I think it may be because of all the problems I had after my sleeve surgery in September with the constant GERD and aspirating the gastric acid every night. I had gotten so scared to eat or drink anything during that time from September to December I mainly ate plain flour tortillas plain cream of wheat and Water. Since the RNY revision on December 10th I have not had any more problems with that but I am still a little scared. I am old school too when it comes to taking care of my family. I know when I would tell my coworkers things that I would do for my family, they said that I was nuts and stuck in a different era. I said no that is actually how it should be but with everyone having to have two incomes to survive these days, it's the little things like that that have been forgotten. I resigned my nursing position in June because of all of my other medical issues. I was a walking time bomb. My health had gotten so bad I could barely make it through the day. So I am trying to tell myself to buck up girlie. Yes you have had three major surgeries since September and it takes time for your body to bounce back. Especially my body because as far as bouncing back it's already half flat because of my other medical issues. I am trying. I have just fell into this hole and I am trying to claw my way out. As I am reading other people's posts I see that I am not the only one. It is definitely a good thing to have this site. It does help a lot. Things you can say to other people besides your family that don't necessarily understand and you don't want to burden them with these things.

Wow, you sound like one strong, amazing woman!! Good for you for taking care of yourself! I know that's hard, especially when you are old school and sound like you take care of everyone else. You know what they say about being in a hole? The only way you can go is UP! Sounds like you've been thru a lot, so one, cut yourself a little slack, but two, you have the right attitude with the "buck up"! Sounds like you're on your way. I hope it didn't sound like I was saying you don't take care of your familyl; clearly you do. I was trying to express how weird I felt for liking to cook even more now that I can't have it.

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣
