Lapband Vs Sleeve Vs Bypass Surgery

Recommended Posts

::sigh:: spank me....I'm being catty...I just loathe the spreading of misinformation (granted, she firmly believes she's correct). I'll go look at the other shiny stuff around here and amuse myself.

I choose the sleeve as it seemed the simplest, it is permanent, which appealed to me, and it did not seem as severe as the bypass. I did not want to band due the many complications and risks it presents over time and also because of type relatively low success rates. As someone said earlier, hardly any surgeons here in NZ do the band now anyway as it has really fallen out of favour. I did not want to malabsorption issues and dumping syndrome common with the bypass. I wanted to get as close to 'normal' as possible.

The other reason I choose the sleeve was for the effect the sleeve is thought to have on the production of two hormones, leptin and ghrelin. The sleeve procedure sees the removal of the fundus which produces these two hormones in our bodies. Oddly, it doesn't seem to work for all but it has for me. It is still largely experimental so few claims can be made but I know I experience an entirely different relationship with food since my sleeve. I reach satiation quickly and I am rarely hungry. Both of these are hormone related. I am convinced of this.

I am now 19 months post op and I am 3 kilos away from my goal weight. I consider half of this to be excess skin. I feel amazing, full of energy and very happy. I have no need for supplements and eat a rich and varied diet. I have zero regrets about my choice to get the sleeve.

I started my journey thinking I wanted the lapband, but after my initial conversation with m surgeon, I was tossed up between sleeve and bypass. My results from an upper endoscopy (Barrett's esophagus) helped me decide bypass. 7.5 weeks later, no regrets.

This thread has been weird, entertaining AND educational. And now I seem to be craving pomegranets and I am not even sure i like them. I do want to go to Australia though. I know one crazy from the land down under (really this guy is over the top) guy that worked with me in the USA. I was assigned to keep him out of HR trouble... seriously... he needed adult supervision. He was alot of fun though but now back in oz. Maybe I should look him up and see if he is still alive and kicking and wants a visitor...haha! (he owes me as I am sure I kept him from getting sued or fired or both for that big mouth)

I said it to the ex more than once....

That's why he's an ex.

Um... I don't think men really care all THAT much as long as they get it! Lmao! If my man did I would tell him to do it himself then or maybe get a shot glass for him! Lmfao!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
