what pain relief can you take after bypass

Recommended Posts

I understand you're not supposed to take things like ibubrofen after bypass surgery but what can we take instead if we get a headache or backache?

Tylenol or narcotics

I am a Caancer patient as well as post RNY (2003) I struggle with chronic severe pain from my cancer and was told NEVER take ibuprofin/advil/naprosyn. I generally go for liquid tylenol first as it works faster. My oncologist has me on a low dose of oxycotin time release and 5/325 percocet for breakthrough pain. Taking all the acietomenipen freaks me out, but what is a person to do. Best to ask your doc.

What about Tylenol gel caps?

Tylenol is the correct over the counter med to take for pain. I don't think it matters what form you use.

Thank you for your responses, we can't get Tylenol easily in the UK and it looks really expensive online but it looks like it is paracetamol based so I'll look and see what I can find that's similar and dump the ibubrofen in my cupboard... For some reason I'd not realised this would be a problem until I came on here. This forum is so useful for info like this, thanks to everyone being so helpful. My surgery is this Weds.

Liquid Lortab but it is a prescription med and at the surgeon's discretion.

Over the counter, I also take Tylenol as needed.

Why can't we take ibruprofen? I've not heard this before? Thanks

No nsaids EVER (Motrin, Advil, Aleve, which are ibuprofrin and naproxin). Because of the extremely high risk of ulcers, I believe. Anyone remember if there is another reason for it?

Be careful with the Tylenol. Do not double up on doses ever. This is a big cause of tylenol overdose. Always take doses six hours apart, and never more than 2000/ 3000 mg a day. ( recommendations vary). Found this out the hard way when an aunt took Tylenol and cold medicine at the same time for the flu. Her liver started to shut down. Scary. Just be careful, ok?

Yes, they cause ulcers.

Do they have the generic acetaminophen? That's pretty much all good ole Tylenol is. Maybe if u ask a pharmacist over there if is available they might can help you. Hope u find something :)

Molly, ask them for Dihydrocodiene. Good stuff and they should be happy to give it and send you home with some :-) I didn't take all of mine but glad I had them.

Hi UK ladies. Hope surgery has gone well for you both. I had my gastric bypass back in July. If paracetamol don't help with any pain now or in the future your allowed, co-codamol or if really bad tramadol just no anti inflammatory meds ever!

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
