Why do pre and post-op diets differ so much?

Recommended Posts

My friend in scheduled for the Sleeve two weeks from today. Mine is scheduled for November 20. Our suggested diets are very different.

She has started Protein Shakes, 1 to 3 a day.

My surgeon/Nut doesn't like using Protein shakes at all.

She will be on a liquid only diet for two to four weeks out.

My diet calls for pureed foods on day two.

Her diet says she can eat pork and beef, six weeks out.

My diet calls for no beef or pork until at least six MONTHS out.

I had someone else, who had the surgery a few months ago, suggest to me that I have a bad nutritionist and to not follow what she said.

Thoughts?

Well my surgery is on the 23rd (7days woo hoo) I saw a nutritionist for the first time yesterday. She put me on a 1200 cal diet per day and suggested replacement of one meal with a Protein Shake. But said that as long as I keep my carbs low and stay at a 1200 Cal diet I would be fine. As for post op 1-2 weeks liquids 1-2 week puree 1-2 weeks and after 4 weeks food as tolerated but still keeping carbs at 0 to minimal.

Mindi,

You will find there are a lot of different pre and post op plans out there. I dont think any of them are more "wrong" or "right" than any other but the plan you get from your surgeon or Nut are what they feel is best and I would stick with it.

I figure they are more experienced and have some historical data to back it up. Plus I want my surgery to be the safest and most successful possible..

It does sound a little restrictive, but there is always a reason. Is the nutritionist working directly with your doctor? If not, I would come right out and ask your doc on your next appointment what he thinks about it.

My pre-sugery diet was two weeks of a packaged Protein shake (we bought through the doctor's office) and directly after was two weeks of full liquids then two weeks of soft foods.

Although I don't fully understand the restriction of beef and pork, I do know that leaner meats have more Protein, and will also speed up the weight loss, so that might have something to do with it. What about fruits/veggies? Are there restrictions on those as well?

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
