December 2013 Sleevers Come In!

Recommended Posts

Hello This is my first post. I started my program in September, jumped through all the hoops and lost some weight; 20lbs. , scheduled for Gastric Sleeve Surgery on December 3rd! Feeling excited, nervous, afraid and emotional all at once. Is this normal?

I am feeling all of the same emotions as well. I thinks it very normal. I am also on dec 3rd! It is getting so close!

Just wanted to weigh in on the pre op diet. I met with the surgeon on Tuesday. No pre op diet, just liquids only one day before. I asked why others were talking about 2 or 3 weeks pre op diet. His response was that because I have been in a six month program at the weight center in the hospital!, a pre op diet was not necessary. While losing 35 pounds, I have been shrinking my liver all along. They have paid very close attention. I have to weigh in every time I visit. I did not have a certain number of pounds to lose, rather just had to show that I could follow the program

Is anybody not really nervous at all and just ready to be on the loser bench with the first few weeks behind us? Yeah you could die from this surgery but you can die from any surgery. I can die in my car later today you just never know. At least we're trying to change and that's all that matters. Sorry just been thinking about this a lot lately. Don't want to bum anyone out. Everyone just asks If I'm nervous and I always say no I'm ready to wake up and ask the nurse if I'm skinny yet! :)

I'm with ya on the not really being nervous thing. I have done so much research and read so many things that i honestly feel like I am as ready as I'll ever be. I just want to be done with it already!

My nervousness comes and goes. This morning I woke up with a stomach full of butterflies for some reason. I can't believe this is actually happening. I am trying to prepare as much as I can -Clean house, freezer meals for family, deciding what to take with me to the hospital. I have 5 weeks until surgery so I imagine I will have many more mornings like this!.

The only thing that makes me nervous is the thought of not waking up from the anesthesia. I know or sounds crazy but that's my only fear. I guess if I don't wake up I would never know it anyways. Ive been looking into wls for about 3 years where I was approved last year for bypass and I chickened out. I'm just ready for it to happen

No one should be scared. I had my first heart surgery when I was 11 and I woke up from anesthesia then had my second surgery when I was 18 and again I woke up from anesthesia. We can't change our destiny. We all want this badly, then we shouldn't think negative. I am not scared at all. Any if anyone who changes their mind I'll take your date since mine is on December 30 lol. But all seriously, this will change for the better and we know it. Obviously there will be bump on the road but just imagine how we will feel during the summer :) ... We will be glad we did this.

I have a healthy fear if any procedure but also know that a tree can fall on me as I walk out the front door.

I've gotten account numbers, passwords, etc. updated and easy to be found but other than that, I'm more excited than anything!

A lot of people are turned off by my doc and his very straight to the point manner and say after seeing him at the seminar they don't want him. I like his cockiness and his no BS attitude. The best compliment I heard about him was from some nurses saying he's the doc you want to trust with your life. He may piss you off personally, but as a medical professional he's the best out there.

I read this over and over on my surgeon as well - also have two second cousins that went to him and a neighbor. they commented that his bedside manner is not the greatest - but that we are not choosing him for being nice, but for being Great at what he does. He has been in our area for quite a while and knows what he is doing and that is what is important. My husband and I actually liked him, when we consulted with him back in September.

Alrighty December sleevers...I think this is the most updated list. LizzyK - I have changed your name, added the other new folks, and noticed that bearman99 is our first Christmas Eve sleever!

patbarry, I noticed that you didn't include a surgery date in your posts, or in your profile, so I have you listed under the "No date yet" list. If you have a date, and can provide that, then I can include you as apporpriate.

Please let me know if you have any questions, or if anything doesn't look right! Crazy numbers so far! This should be FUN!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
