December 2013 Sleevers Come In!

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'm getting done on 12/2. Had preop today. No issues with Cigna approval. I had read some horror stories. The only bummer is surgery is not until 4:00 in the afternoon. I will be a wreck and probably won't get up into my room until after 10 pm. I know how important is to get up and walk and am afraid I will be wiped. Getting surgery with Dr. Julie Kim at Mt. Auburn in Cambridge, MA. Good luck to all December sleevers. What a way to start 2014.

My two week pre-op diet starts on Monday! I am from Jersey as well. My surgeon is Dr. Fetehia. I think he is in the same office as Dr. Forester. Nervous about the liquid diet but will do it. Only bad thing is I will only be on shakes for Thanksgiving and I haven't told my very judge mental in-laws about the surgery yet. So I plan on telling them that I do not want to hear anything negative. To keep their negativity to themselves!

Carrie

Great attitude Carrie, you are doing this for you - I wish you the best - can't wait to hear about all the success stories in the new year!

Big ups to all the holiday season sleevers!

Going through this whole process, makes one realize just how much society is food-focused. I finally told my best friend today about my date (she too is overweight and knew I was thinking about it but didn't take me serious) - all she said was "are you nuts? you're not going to be able to eat all the holiday goodies!"... and to that I said "hooray!" She just couldn't fathom the idea of giving up all the gorging on holiday food.< /p>

I know some people here will want to have a little binge before their surgery, have a last pigout on some favorite or no-no foods, etc. Me, I'm preparing now both mentally and physically by already cutting way back, eating right, and doing the high-protein thing (I've done this many times before on attempts to lose weight but always gained it back!). Knowing that I'm all in with an irreversible procedure now, easing into the pre-op liquid diet this way would be much more helpful than calorie cold-turkey I think.

How is everyone else tackling this?

I'm not going to miss the food fest. And, I'm looking forward to saving a ton of money at the supermarket going forward!

Happy Sleevemas to all the December folks!! :)

I am very excited and very ready for this surgery and lifestyle change! I am self pay and could have had the surgery earlier in November but I do not recover well from procedures. I had laparoscopic gallbladder removal last year and couldn't stand up straight for 2 weeks! This surgery will be similar. Pain meds just don't work for me.

I host all holidays at my house. Last year, we were between houses, and had no room in that house to host anything!!

So, I have to Celebrate the holidays this year. I would have been perfectly fine with not eating Thanksgiving dinner even if everyone else was, but I didn't want to be miserable trying to cook it!

I have been practicing, though. I am very aware of chewing my food. I already don't drink much during my meal unless I haven't chewed well, so that's not as big of an issue for me. I'm cutting out caffeine and soda gradually. I've also been leaving food on my plate. I grew up with the "clean your plate" demands and I have issues with that. I'm not going out of my way to eat things I know I can't or shouldn't eat later on, but I am enjoying what I do eat!

My 2 week preop starts right after Thanksgiving so I will send leftovers home with folks instead of keeping them! I will stock the kitchen with self serve foods for my Mom and hubby.

So excited to get this done!

Hello Everyone! I will be sleeved on Dec. 3!! I can't believe it is only two weeks away. I am nervous, overwhelmed and feeling about 50 other different emotions lol! I start my Pre Op two week liquid diet tomorrow...just so happens to fall on Thanksgiving so no Turkey for me but I am ok with that. I have had enough amazing Thanksgiving to last a lifetime... and I am trying to get away with it being my favorite holiday lol.

Its been a crazy month trying to fit these pre surgical testing and appointments, as well as tying up loose ends at work while I will be out. But its all going to be worth it...I can't wait to get things moving and start living a new life. This summer I will be beach ready!!!

Good luck to everyone out there and the start of our new journey!!!

First day of pre-op went pretty good. Two Premier chocolate shakes, one for Breakfast, one lunch; two sugar free popsicles for Snacks and for dinner, 3 oz of tuna and a small salad with cucumbers and light dressing.

Drank about 60 oz of Water (pretty much my usual), hard part was not drinking with my dinner meal and waiting 30 min before an after before I could have some diet ice-tea, also chewing every bite approx. 20x.

Tomorrow. Temptation! Day 2. I have a lunch meeting, gonna do small salad and that's it.. (fingers crossed)...lol

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
