I'm 18 days post up and I have to travel out of the country for a family emergency. I ask my doctor if it was to soon he said he will leave it to my judgment .... Well there is the problem I feel ok I have some pain here and there mostly on my left side but I read the is normal I'm still on soft food until this next week . How long does it take for our stomach to be healed ?? Can something still go wrong at this point ?

Did your doctor physically check you? I would hope that he would say its too soon if that is th case. I'm three weeks post surgery Tues. I get weak and tired easily, I'm still eating only puréed food and scrambled eggs. are you going to a country where you feel comfortable seeking medical attention if needed?

I think that your doctor is the best qualified to help you make the final choice though.

He did check my incisions after a week post up he said everything look good and then told me to make and appointment for 3 months later , now I call him and let him know that I have to leave the country and he told me that it was up to me . I do get tired quick and sleepy and I really don't know how I feel about medical care in ECUADOR. I just don't know what to do .

How urgent is this emergency? I personally wouldn't be traveling abroad unless it was a matter of life and death.

How many days do you think you'd be gone? I don't think there should be any major complication but you can never tell. I think you should perhaps look a bit more into medical care in ecuador perhaps? If they're set to handle VSG problems?

It could take up to 12 weeks to be fully healed all the way through according to my surgeon. We will be at some risk of complications for the rest of our lives. There is no endpoint to the potential for the staple line to rupture, though after several weeks, it is very significantly reduced. It really does depend on how you are feeling and if you think you can take care of yourself where you're going. Some obvious potential issues that I can think of off the top of my head are the fatigue (will you have somewhere to rest, or will you be pushed to be more physically active than you can tolerate?), nutrition (can you follow your post-op diet there?), hydration (will you be able to have access to clean Water or bottled sugar free beverages 24 hours a day? I think I read that dehydration is the #1 cause of hospital admission after bariatric surgery and is a real risk.), symptom management (can you take enough anti nausea meds, etc with you for your trip? If you aren't experiencing nausea now, what if you do? Can you take some with you just in case you do experience it and it becomes problematic?). Other than that... I don't know. If I were feeling okay and the doctor left it up to me, I think I might go. While you are at increased risk of needing medical attention, we all are at risk of needing medical attention, even if we are healthy. It's just a risk we take. You're about 3 weeks out, so I expect your incisions are closed and at least you don't really have to worry about infection.

Not sure. Lots of things to consider. Good luck and I hope that whatever your emergency is, it works out as well as possible and you and your family take care of each other.

Good luck.

Maybe place a quick call to him and tell him you are struggling again. You really need him to clarify if he thinks that this trip in its self won't cause you problems.

This might be too late since you wanted advice asap but I had to fly 16 days post op and my doctor was completely fine with it. He stressed that I should get up and try to walk around at least once an hour to prevent blood clots since it was a 6 hour flight. I did ask for assistance with my carry-on luggage because I couldn't lift more than 10 pounds and didn't want to pull anything. I packed my own soft foods for travel. I had no problems what so ever but I didn't go out of the country so I wasn't too concerned with things on the medical end. I would say go be with your family during this time.

I would go if you want to see your Grandma before she dies. I wouldn't risk not seeing her.....I just lost my Grandma in August and it was heartbreaking

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
