My doc is of the "only eat when your hungry" school of thought. I have been doing that but am finding I am eating at most 600-700 calories a day and am starting to get nauseous and weak. I am thinking really need to be eating three meals a day just to keep my energy levels up and to try and help with the nausea. Does anyone else's doc say to only eat when you feel hungry even if that's once a day?

The problem is I can literally eat one meal a day and be fine. I am going to try and up my calories to 800 and see how I feel. :)

Mine also says to only eat if I'm hungry.

I'm never hungry in the morning so I just have a Protein shake. For the rest of the day, I'm careful to get in lots of Protein and veggies when I do eat. It took me awhile to get it right but now even eating just two meals and one shake a day, I manage to get in 1000-1200 calories a day.

My doc is anti Protein Shake, but I think it's the only way I am going to get all my cals And protein in. I go in on the 29th and will ask some questions. :)

Why are docs against Protein Shakes? ?? We are made to live off them after surgery.

Because they are liquid calories. The thins we eat right after surgery like mashed potatoes and other mushy foods are not good daily on a long term basis because they don't fill you up for long.

Liquid calories sure, however, a great source of Protein. Necessary if you are incapable of actually eating the min Protein levels and/or need additional calories because you are inable to eat (or are not hungry enough to eat).

Common sense says that if you are experiencing side effects of undereating than the 'eat when you are hungry' approach is not working for you. There is such an individual spectrum here. Whereas one person who eats only when hungry takes in 500 cals another will take in 1000 cals. The body has a basic metabolic demand despite your hunger. Signs of insufficient nutrition are things like lightheadedness, shakes, nausea, lethargy etc. Please report those symptoms to your doc and say what is plan B? Banded or not, malnutrition poses as many problems as excessive nutritional intake.

Best of luck

I only eat when I'm hungry, and that's not often.....I stopped counting calories 4 months after surgery, when I hit the green Zone.....

Never had a problem with lack of energy, metabolism, whatever....workout 5:30 in the morning on a empty stomach...gues I was burning stored fat for my energy because I now have none....no loose sagging skin either for that matter.....

Personally I do not play into the "Starvation" mode scare.....I never found I had to eat more to loose more...it has always been the opposite for me.

But that's how it worked for me to be successful...other people have their success stories and that's good....

I am on solids now, but my instructions are to eat only 4 oz and I continue with the Protein Shakes, it's being hard to figure out what to eat...I am counting calories, not even 1000 per day, I am walking 15 min. Today I jog for 5 minutes (by the way, it was the first time in my life I jog) and then some arms and legs exercises. After doing all that I went up 2 lbs. I guess I go back to loosing after my first fill!

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
