December Surgeries!?!?!?

Recommended Posts

Yes it's all behind me and I went home without pain medication. Just a bit of pain moving to lie on my sides. I felt more nausea than pain but the nurses were great. I am better every day and the scale is going down pretty fast. :-)

Waiting in the surgeons office -- final visit before surgery tomorrow. I can't believe how scared I am. Part of me just wants to run out the door, drive thru a fast food line and forget this whole thing. Frankly, if I hadn't done nine months of prep, starved for two weeks including Xmas on Protein Shakes alone, and done a bowel prep yesterday -- I might actually do it. I'm so frightened!

I was terrified too. My surgery was 12/18 and it goes by quickly. The fear was by far worse than the reality. I I am shrinking! I started at my highest weight of 289. I lost some weight during the pre-op 2 weeks of Liquid Protein. Today my bathroom scale said 245! This surgery was truly the best Christmas gift I could have possibly gotten. Hang in there and be gentle with yourself. I will keep you in my thoughts.

Thank you! I'm looking forward to it being over for sure :-). Is the pain all but a memory now?

You will do amazing! I had minimal pain for about 24-36 hours and then that was it! After that was the normal I just had surgery so had to walk slow..sit down easy ect but I'm 2 weeks post op today and no regrets!

Surgery went really well yesterday.;) Dr. found a hiatal hernia which he repaired. Chest is a little tight. I was able to sit up in a chair late last evening for 45 minutes. Step one diet today and walking, walking, walking.

Me too. Surgery was yesterday afternoon doc found a hernia and said my gallbladder was no good so he took that too. He said my ten ur old lap band had excessive scarring and surgery lasted about three hours. I'm about 20 hours post op and I've been up walking lots. Can't say I've had no pain cause I've had quite a bit. Lots of nausea, and tons of air in my tummy but it's starting to get better. I'm sipping on broth and Jello but I've been working on this for about an hour. Tiniest sip and I get gurgles and a little pressure in my chest. This is gonna take awhile. But it's over so yay!!!!

I had surgery on Thursday. It is frightening. I have had surgery before but forgot the process. My pain was minimal but you will be uncomfortable. I know I had second thoughts up to the time of surgery. Hang in there as I am sure both of us will be very happy about it soon.

Hoping for the best for you.

Fixing the hernia and having your gallbladder removed could account for the pain. I had very little pain with my RNY in May and poured most of my pain meds down the drain after 3-4 days. Then I had my gallbladder removed and a hernia repair on 12/6, which I thought would be a piece of cake after having my insides rearranged. That pain was WAY worse and lasted much longer. I used up all my percosets for that one! Hang in there... It'll get better! :-)

Thank you both. Yep I think it was the hernia repair that was causing so much pain. Doc said nearly all band patients have em too. But I'm feeling great now! And weight is coming off. I'm down six lbs since Monday. Uncanny. :D

I think if I didn't have the hiatal hernia to repair pain would be much better to handle. I have noticed I feel better eating Protein, energy higher and the food seems to " stick" better if that makes sense. I still woke up at 2 am for pain pill due to sternum cramping last night. It will pass for us. ;)

so day five for me and you huh. How are u doing? If u have a my fitness pal account u are welcome to friend me if u like. Seeing as how we both had surgery on the same day :) my user name on there is xrayshel it's a great way to track everything I eat and I'm able to see all my friends food diaries too so that's helpful! And motivational as well.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
