Tells me that I didn't need the surgery!!!! I understand where they are coming from but it's getting on my nerves....do they honestly think that I would put myself through ALL of this just because?! What really grind my gears is when they don't even educate themselves on the surgery and just assume crap!

Oh I know... I was told "you are not big enough". WTH I was two pounds shy of 300! That's not ok. I know they mean well but it is like I tossed a coin.

I totally agree. I get that all the time "Why don't you just do it the normal way??" Or "I know someone who did that and gained all her weight back. I'm sure you'll do fine though".

That is when you tell them that you really don't care what they think as this does not effect them at all. Then you tell them that obviously they have never struggled with a weight issues because if they had they would know how hard it can be especially when secondary diagnosis hinder weight loss. I then proceed to tell them that i have spent the last 8 months doing many classes and research and with the assistance of my doctors have come to this decision. Last I let them know that surgery is not easy or an easy way out. It takes alot of work and wls is only a tool to assist you. I know how frustrating others ignorance can be as I have had to tackle it myself. I am an RN and have been honest with coworkers and friends. At work we see the bad patients of WLS and the complications so of course that is what everyone bases their opinion on. WLS has come a long way and I have seen many successful people. :)

I heard all those things from my family too!!! Then I had the surgery and thought that they would stop. Nope! Still the endless stories of gastric disasters. So I just shake it off and keep going. I mean we are strong people, instead shaking off overweight comments we shake off gastric comments.

I was told something horrible when I had my gastric bypass! I am on Medicare and one of my "friends" said "I cannot believe that Medicare is covering an "elective surgery" so basically I am paying for your surgery because you are too lazy to get off your butt and excercise and keep the twinkes out of your mouth!" Needless to say I do NOT need friends like that and I explained to her the process we have to go through to even get approved for the surgery and how hard I tried to loose the weight on my own so many years. It was just a stab in the heart to hear that!!

That was really awful to say and I know it hurts even more when it comes from the people that you thought would support your decision...For years I was talked about because of my weight and I see since I will no longer be heavy they're going to be talking about my surgery....I can't win or lose!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...
