/sigh I Hate Ignorant People

ok so i got into it with someone today and i must say that i have learned that people who are stuck on their own opinions drive me nuts. Here is the thing, they call it the practice of medicine right? that means that it is constantly evolving and changing and growing right? So basically the issue was the following. the first comment out of her mouth was I just dont understand why you dont just stop eatting? Its not that hard just stop. Why have your guts ripped out. I know 10 people that have had this surgery and 8 of the 10 gained all their weight back. I asked if they followed the diet and she said No but they all were just like you, they said they were going to follow it. I said well, i view it as risk vs reward and the reward outweighs the risk in this instance. She goes your being biased because this is what you want you can say you wont have a blood clot and die i just dont understand why you dont just exercise. I said, nothing says i wont drop of a massive MI tomarrow either and she goes right but the risk is higher with the surgery and i said no, actually. she goes well you just are in denial, you think because your in the medical field that you know more than the average person and really you dont. You just are being stupid. You should just exercise and stop eatting so much.

Ok so on this note i am just gonna say i just gave up and say F it. this is comming from the same woman that thinks that if someone else has a disease she must have it too. I am just so tired of no support from family or anyone around me /sigh. Makes me want to move to arizona and start over. where no one knows that i had surgery and no one can judge me.

have a great day all, better than me anyway.

Sorry!! I lost my best friend because of wls and her feeling the same way this person did. It's sad but I have no regrets!! Don't let anyone get you down! It's your life to live and make decisions as you see fit!! Best of luck!

I also lost a very close friend because of this and had no support from a few family members bc I had complications from a csection that landed me in the hosptial for 6 weeks. They thought it would happen again.

You did the right think by walking away. People like that are too closed minded to think about WLS from another perspective than their own. You can try to explain it until you are blue in the face but she won't hear you. The bottom line is that you are entitled to do what you want with your body and others do not need to approve of that (except for the insurance company lol).

Sorry you had a sucky day but hopefully tomorrow is much better!

And btw, how many more days do you have left?

Only people who have had the weight loss issues, can truly understand. My sister who only eats what she can burn (1,000 calories a day) finally understood whatigo through when I got injured and she had to help take care of me. She finally understood the pain, the medication other outside factors besides just eating and exercising is usually not the only problem.

I feel for you. If it was as easy as she said about just stop eating and exercise then doesn't she think you would have tried that by now ? Just remember to get your support where you can and forget about trying to get it from those who don't understand. You don't have to convince anyone of anything. You did good though so don't feel down. Life is full of people like her so be prepared for next time. Think how you'd rather handle people like her? Do you want to be in that debate with a person that won't accept your view? Also remember that she probably has your best interest at heart because she was saying how you could die and sounded worried. I don't know what else to say I guess I started rambling a bit lol :)

I think that sometimes people speak out of fear, fear of the unknown. Since this is something we choose to go through we do our research and we make an informed decision based on our needs. If it is a person that truly cares for you it may be fear. The problem is when you try to explain and they do not listen that is when FU comes in handy, LOL just kidding!

I got this quote from Glee's Lea Michele, "At the end of the day, you have to just do what makes you happy; it's unhealthy to constantly be thinking about how you should present yourself to everyone." I LOVE THIS STATEMENT.

This is why I told only a handful of people about my surgery--two family members and a very small number of friends (and made them promise to keep in to themselves). Many people who are unfamiliar with WLS think it's the "easy way out," but all of us know that is definitely not the case.

Nonetheless, when I told my sister and one of my closest friends that I was planning to have surgery, they became really hostile, saying it was too drastic, too dangerous, and just plain stupid. Their reactions caused me to distance myself from both of them. Both are quite overweight, and I think they felt threatened by the fact that I was doing something about my weight. I don't need that kind of negative energy when I'm making positive changes in my life!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
