Right out of surgery: how much walking is enough?

Recommended Posts

My doctor said to me "the more I walk, the better". Everyone keeps saying that. But what is the minimum ? Nobody will tell me. Is it a few walks to the bathroom? Is it 5 mins of walking a few times a day? one hour walk maybe?

I'm not trying to do the bare minimum for my weight loss, but i'm very tired since my surgery 5 days ago, and right now I can only do so much walking before I feel so tired and sit back down. So that's why I want to know if at least I'm doing enough? Or barely? :-/

I am going to exercice more, and I'm sure my energy level will get better as I get Protein in, but I just want to know, what is enough right after surgery?

Maybe you could just go on short walks throughout the day before you feel like you hit the wall. That's what I did and was soon able to do much more.

I'm 15 days out and I've had a rough two weeks, so if I can make it to the mailbox and back I'm happy. Doctor said he is more concerned with me healing than beginning an exercise plan right now. That is good because just take a shower is a two part deal. Part one is taking the shower, part two is getting the energy up to get dressed. Good luck!

I started walking around the unit, but I didn't have much pain, 1st steps out of the room was a walk (okay a shuffle) around the unit, maybe 5 minutes, second time out was 2x around, next morning was 3, and eventually up to 5x around before being dismissed about 5 PM. Walks at home continued, starting around the block at 1/2 of a mile. continued increasing to 2 miles 1/2 a mile at a time, so for September it was about 40 miles, about 18 hours of walking for the month. It was a good change, my wife and I walked together, first time in years do to a regular activity together.

,

Right now, this soon out from surgery, your two goals are to remain hydrated and get your Protein in. If you can only do 5 minutes of walking, just do 5 minutes every day. Try to do a couple of these a day. Worry about walking longer/faster after you feel stronger again.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
