Best and worst "compliments"

Recommended Posts

The boss over sales can NEVER remember anyones name... EVER (its awful but true) he will call you 5 names before he gets it right... so my name right off the bat everytime he sees me now... "skinny minny" its a good thing i dont need him for a raise.

Today a co-worker says "you done losing weight cause your face is too thin"

I replied with "funny, no one ever had the guts to tell me that my face was too fat before. when you're thin its like everyone has a right to make comments about your weight....and you dont have that right - but thank you for calling me thin"

I guess she thought about it, because later in the day she came up to me to say she was sorry, and that i was right, she has no right to make comments about anyones weight and that she was proud of me for wanting to get healthy.

best comment - we were going to a friends wedding, and i came out dressed up - my husband, dad, step mom, & son all said at the same time WOW!! simple comment but had a power punch to my heart!

It's funny how women will be bolder then men in their comments about my obvious weight loss and change in appearance. 52 lbs does show! I had two comments this week from men that made me smile. First male friend, that I had not seen in months, said "Wow you look great." Of course no mention of weight loss. I know he could see the loss, but was too politically correct to say it verbally. Second male acquaintance mentioned that I looked great and loved my new haircut. I have had a new do lately. I smiled and thanked him and said yes, the new haircut did wonders, but the 52 pound weight loss really helped! He said I knew there was something different. You look great! But then you were always beautiful. What a sweetie.

Women will be much more direct and outspoken. Like "you have lost a TON of weight!" Ha! Hmmmm a ton, eh? Didn't realize I was THAT heavy...

I do my best to listen to the TONE instead of the WORDS that are being said. A friend who says excitedly, "You are shrinking down to nothing!!" with a smile and a hug means something much differently than a "friend" who says, "You are shrinking down to nothing" with a bit of a sneer and a sideways eyeball.

I also know that I take things differently from people who I don't care much for than I do from people I love. I know I brace myself for insults from people who never have nothing nice to say and even when they do, I may hear it differently than they intend.

We can't control what other people say or do, but we can totally control how we react. I am choosing to take every word as a great compliment because I am riding high on excitement with my emerging new self and NO ONE can take that away from me. :D

going to try to do the same thing. .great idea!

I have really appreciated this thread, probably more than any other. THIS is the stuff that I worry about. Not drinking liquids for weeks or extra skin but how to navigate through the negative people out there. I work in a hospital. I'm a manager. I probably have a decent to good relationship with the majority but as a boss, I'm a natural target. And nurses LOVE to judge and comment. I've told only 3 people outside of my family that I'm doing this (I'm pre-sleeve) but I'm not naive that some will figure it out. When I've lost weight before, I felt sabotaged by others comments, the good and the bad. I'm not a shallow person and I just can't wrap my head around people who only see peoples physical features. I told my doc and np that I was worried about how to respond. They suggested having come backs planned. I appreciate all the clever ideas here. The good thing (one of the many) is that this time I'm doing it for good, and old enough to not care what people say (at least not like I did at 25). I tell people being in your 40's is liberating. I need no ones approval. It feels good when you share in my success but unsolicited comments won't be received well.

Best compliment when telling my close friend I was gonna do it: "I'm so happy for you, you're so bubbly and full of life but you will be even more so and feel so much better". She's a keeper!

I have to age that these are the issues that I sori about the most too.

This is definitely not the easy way![/quote

heather,

This route is not easy. It requires commitment and trying power.

I send to think that way.

It's just not true.

Surgery is a HELP, a tool,

not a magic bullet.

In the long run you will be the winner.

How about this weird ...uh compliment? From my younger brother when I lost a lot of weight before (right now waiting for my Dec 9 sleeve.)

"Oh my gosh you're emaciated" and in the next breath "you look wonderful"

lol apparently emaciated = wonderful looking!!

Around the same time a very close friend said "Don't lose anymore weight or your face will look very old." In the meantime, I was still 60 lbs away from being at the high end of a normal weight.

My good girlfriend complemented me on losing weight. So also added that she did not like my big hips. Ok..... Now she constantly tells me I'm pretty. I haven't really taken offense, but I ponder if she thought I was not attractive before..... Of course I always smile and say thank you.

People usually do not know what to say.

They may think you weight loss is due to an illness like cancer..... And not want to ask.

The other thing I like o say is: " the bitch of it is, no one notices the first 75 pounds"

At a 25 pound loss my mother told me I was " gaining weight".

At 85 pound loss she " noticed". I has lost some weight, but had started to gain........

Screw them all. it's all about YOU.

About you being more healthy.

The question "when is the rest of you getting here?"

Best: "wow where is the rest of you!"

Worst: "you know after losing all that weight your going to have tons of extra skin"

Weirdest/awkward: my friend said to her husband "look how much weight Jess lost!!" he looks me up and down and smiles at me and my friend said "wait, did you just check out my best friend!?" Lol!

Omg all my mother talks about is how much extra skin I'll have after this process is over- it's the first thing and the last thing she wants to talk about every time I see her- and she's constantly hatching new plans to "fix" me further. I had to stop her one day and say "one project at a time, Mom."

She also seems to be obsessively predicting how great my life will be and how beautiful I'll become. It's pretty upsetting. While I am also excited about my future, I'd love it if my mother wouldn't make it so perfectly clear how disgusting she thinks I look.

Truthfully I was pretty happy even at my largest weight- I had gastric bypass so I could have a child and be a healthy mom. Hopefully I'll be a more empathetic mom than my own lol!

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
