Dumping - does it ever go away?

Recommended Posts

Twice now I've had episodes of "eating" (drinking, really - still on liquids) something and within 20 minutes having nausea and sweats, followed by diarrhea.

Both times this happened after I ate something from a restaurant.

I've had almost exclusively homemade Soups and I know what's in them, but once I got some butternut squash crab Soup from Whole Foods, and today I had a chicken tortilla Soup at Chili's.

In both cases, the Soups were blended and thinned, but must have had cream or too much fat.

Is this dumping? And will it always happen when I eat something too creamy/fatty/sweet? Does it ever go away?

Thanks for any insight!

Yes, unfortunately that is dumping. It is usually with sweet stuff but obviously it happens with other things as well. I haven't experienced dumping as yet. Did it do it with Soups of similar substance? I just tried the chicken tortilla Soup from Whole Foods and it was wonderful and it didn't strike me as creamy. Maybe you should try that one and see what happens. Best of luck with this!

Hmm, interesting. I'll ask about this at my follow-up appointment on Friday. Thanks very much.

I was told by my surgeon you do not get dumping syndrome with the sleeve

For most of us this doesn't happen but it definitely does happen to some. I have read many threads of this happening to people.

I agree with tbomb; no dumping with the sleeve. Maybe you ate too much, too fast or it was too rich and your tummy just didn't like it. Your surgery was only 12 days ago, maybe your moving too fast on the Soup thing...? If it doesn't go away within an hour or so, I wouldn't hesitate to call the doc, this may be a sign that something is wrong!

Maybe your lactose intolerant now. I wasn't before surgery, but now I am. I had those same symptoms.

My surgeon told me to keep it simple. You have to be careful with the blended Soups early on because of so many ingredients. You are really starting over with food so you want to start slow so that if something doesn't sit well with your taste buds or your new stomach, you can identify it and avoid it. Since the Soup was blended (sounds delicious, though) it may be hard to pin point the culprit! Keep it simple and you should be fine....if things don't get better, I would check with your doctor.

My NUT actually told me that "they" say there is not dumping with the sleeve but there is some evidence that some people do experience dumping.

Well, I guess I have some evidence, that's for sure, lol!

Today is my last day of liquids. Then on to purees. We'll see how things go with that, and I'll ask my doc on Friday about all of this.

I've never had that happen with me either. Actually, I've had the complete opposite. Feels like I've shut down if you know what I mean:)

I experienced dumping with my sleeve at about 1.5 weeks out. I added a tbsp of Peanut Butter to my Protein Shake. Thought i was dying, LOL! i explained what happened to my NUT and she said it was dumping and it was very unusual for a sleever to get that. In fact she said I was the only one she had ever heard of, but the symptoms were consistent. I have read several other people on this forum have experienced the same thing. The good news is that YES it goes away. As soon as your system is 'used' to food again it will go away. In fact, I have a few (I allow myself 6) M & Ms a day to get my chocolate fix and have suffered no ill effects! Now, I did try ice cream on vacation a few weeks ago, didn't get the full on dumping, but did have to immediately throw up!

My surgeon says he believes dumping is under reported with the sleeve and it does happen. I'm 2 weeks post op today and its happened to me once with a Protein Shake :/

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
