Heightened senses after Sleeve

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone, I went to my one week post op checkup earlier this week and since surgery I have noticed I have a heightened sense of smell, and taste. I know it sounds weird but I talked to the PA and she was telling me that its quite often that people have heightened senses after the sleeve. One thing that I don’t like about this is that for some reason I can smell peoples breath and it always smells bad and sometimes really weird. When I drink things like Protein Shakes if I have to much it starts to give me a metallic taste in my mouth. Drinking Powerade zero’s start to taste like Jello. This is the only thing I hate worse than the soar belly and blood clot in my right arm. The PA told me that this heightened senses are usually caused because of the anesthesia . Has anyone else experienced this at any time?

i had heightened ability to smell for a few days. it was amazing for a while. i remember being at the airport and being able to tell you what the food stores were for 100 yards. Still I was not hungry so it did not bother me too much. after a while I just wanted to get away from it.

the other thing to look out for is changes in temperature tolerance. i have always been hot, needing cool air to feel comfortable, now i am all over the place, from hot to cold to in between. I have to keep a heavy sweatshirt nearby and it put it on and shed it regularly during the day. You would think i was going through menopause.

Yeah it's like being pregnant all over again. It will pass in due time. :D

Yup, heightened smell is what I am experiencing. It is EXACTLY like being pregnant all over again. I'm 6 weeks out of surgery and it's still happening. I am just getting used to it and thinking if it stays and the weight drops off....I will take that trade-off any day! I try to keep an extra arms distance from people since I can smell their breath at a heightened level and close friends/family...I throw them a mint :)

My taste has changed. I can taste sweeteners now and they taste chemically. Splenda is the only one I can stand and where before the sleeve I had 4 in a large McDonalds iced tea now I do 2-3.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
