PreOp Liquid Diet.....joke seriously

Recommended Posts

So I've been on my 2 week liquid diet since last Monday 7/15 and at first it was super freakin hard and way emotional. By day 3 I just felt normal feeling crazy so it got a little better. I started reading around that some people have NO pre op diet, or have a high Protein pre op diet and couple days liquid, some only have 3 days liquid the situations were none of the same. I got super frustrated and started eating baked chicken at night aka just ate high protein foods then I started freakin out knowing I wasn't obeying my docs rules so I stopped and went back to just liquids. I haven't been good with my shakes. They make me sick my stomach gets sooo upset. Anyways. Last night I cheated big time :( had sushi! Ugh. I'm just frustrated and confused because how in the world is my doctor to know my liver size so how will he know its shrunk or not?! I've lost 15 pounds in over a week even with cheating soooo I hope it's all good surgery day. Lol. I figure if I'm losing and I've cheated at least I've lost and my liver is shrinking. Right? Thoughts? Help lol.

My surgery is this Friday. I was on Protein only since last Friday...shakes, Meal Replacement bars and the occasional hard-boiled egg. I started the liquid only diet today and am STARVING. I just shoved 3 Gummy candies into my mouth and am feeling soooooooooo guilty!

If the Protein shakes are upsetting your tummy, I'd try lactose-free ones. I can't do anything that has lactose in it either.

I'm on day five of liquid and I do think of chomping into something delish--but haven't so far. I'm doing it with my husband which makes it a lot easier but the hardest thing is wanting a nap and being tired all the time.

Hang in there, and get back on that horsey!

Just before i was rolled into surgery i told my Dr i hadn't lost the amount of weight he wanted me to lose. He said the diet isn't to lose weight. It is only to shrink and soften the liver. That is done by eliminating carbs. I don't suggest that anyone go against their Drs orders or cheat. I do suggest that if you do decide to cheat that you do it with a zero carb item.

People make too big of a deal over this pre op. Your right he isn't gonna know anything. I didn;t have one and I have 30 Lbs to my personal goal of 130 lbs lost in 6 months.

He didn't open you up and measure your god dang liver and he is going to use a liver retractor anyway. You don;t think your money hungry doctor is going to stop your surgery because you ate sushi? Please.

Relax live your life and see ya on the other side.

I'm not having any trouble with the liquid diet. I'm on day 6 and I've lost 6.8 pounds. That's enough to keep me motivated. I've kept my Protein at roughly 70 gms/day, and my calories between 500 - 640. I haven't been hungry, and have taken Tylenol for my mild headaches

No, he didn't open and measure the liver. The fact is that most WLS candidates have enlarged/ fatty livers. The liver lies in front of the area he must operate on. In order to access it he must use retractors and move it out of the way. If it is overly large or firm it could become difficult to move. Moving it could result in laceration of the liver. There are many cases of patients waking up in recovery with the incisions and recovery time but no sleeve because contrary to your assumption that they are all too money hungry to use sound medical judgement, most do. If fact, if you have a Dr that you believe will crack and whack whether it is safe for his patient or not you really should run.

For me, I found that after my 7 day required full liquid diet pre surgery that I was actually grateful for doing it because it prepared me for what I was in store for the 2 weeks following surgery, FULL liquids. It wasn't a hard transition then to do that for 2 weeks after and then the 2 weeks of puree/soft foods. Again all surgeons are different with pre and post op diets. Best of luck to you!

I wasn't rude at all.

I said relax and live your life.

Your the one crying because you had sushi.

Have you ever seen an actual surgery? I have a video of mine and the liver really isn't over the area they actually cut. Yeah its in the way that's why they retract it, Its less than a 1/4 over the actual stomach.

But hell if your doctor says drink liquid so your body's immunity goes down or "shrinks your liver" do what he says. I had a state of the art, up to date doctor who did not require anything of the sort.

You are fine. Just follow your doctor's orders to the best of your ability starting now. Every doctor performs the surgery in his or her way and therefore has specific rules that they think keep you the safest. Most doctors are not sadists and do not put you on a liquid diet to punish you, but because he or she feels that this is the best practice.

My doctor used the daVinci robot and travels the country teaching other surgeons how to use it. He, too, has performed thousands of surgeries and has never had a leak. I know for a fact that he will not do the surgery if he doesn't feel you are healthy enough for you to be safe during the procedure. There were two women on my floor that were opened up and stitched shut, sleeveless, because he didn't feel it was the right time for them.

My diet was two weeks of 2 shakes a day and one meal of high protein, unlimited veggies and no carbs. Like you, I had something I wasn't supposed to have and called my NP the next day. She snickered a bit at me because I went into full confessional mode, and then gave me ideas on what to do to combat my hunger including allowing extra Snacks during the day. I lost a lot pre-op and the doctor was pleased so he operated.

I am so happy I stuck to my plan. It showed me that I had the strength to follow through with this decision and be successful. I've got a ways to go, but I have no doubt I can do it. :)

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
