Hi all,

I've been feeling down lately. I'm in my 4th week, and I've been doing pretty well until now. I don't know why suddenly it's kicking in, but I've been almost mourning my old stomach. I miss being able to eat whatever, and eat what my family is eating. I miss being able to drink in between bites if I wanted to. I'm finding myself crying and just...sad. Anyone else experience this?

While I miss being able to eat/drink as much as my head wants to, I also recognize that there's no going back...so why waste energy on depression/sadness/crying?! Life's too short to dwell on things we can't change.

I'm not trying to. Obviously I don't like it and wish I didn't feel this way! :(

you can still eat what you want just not as much and you can drink when you eat you just won't feel as full as long.

I know; sorry if what I wrote made it sound otherwise - surely didn't mean it that way! For me, every day is a new step in the process...and every temptation brings a choice - victory or defeat. I focus on being positive and making good choices because, I know, this is what I need to do for me.

Remind yourself of all of the reasons you did this - perhaps, make a list and hang it somewhere you'll see it frequently! Writing tends to be healing for me, so I appreciate being able to blog and utilize social media/groups to vent my frustrations, read about others' journeys, etc.

I'm 8 months out, and I still sometimes get a little sad when I see everyone consuming way more than they should. But when I put on my size 12 jeans, I'm totally over it. The further out you get, the less you'll miss it or feel sad. Someone once posted "nothing tastes as good as thin feels". Hang in there. Things will improve day by day.

I think once I get to the stage where I can have more options in the diet it will get easier. It's just really hard right now for some reason...

you can still eat what you want just not as much and you can drink when you eat you just won't feel as full as long.

I think we all go through some sort of depression.. Lord knows I did. Sometimes still find myself feeling kinda sad when I see my family at holiday celebrations, but like someone else posted when I fit into my cute clothes and like what I see in the mirror my frown turns into a smile. Chin up , it will get better one day at a time.

I feel the same. I just started my fifth week and I'm also feeling down. I didn't realize how much I used food for enjoyment out of life. Now I just need to change my focus. I hope you feel better soon. Our hormones are probably adjusting too but don't be afraid to ask for help if you need it.

4 weeks? I'd say you are right on track! Trust me most of us went through a depressive state right around then! Hormones going crazy from weight loss, a changing body and mourning our comfort and friend food. I knew going into this that the depression was a real part of it at this stage so I was able to ride it out knowing it was coming and "normal"

Be nice to yourself and know it will pass :)

Starting third week, lost 9 + 19 preop, still so sad and regretful. Can't reply to well wishers yet. I want to cheat every minute I'm awake and can't imagine this will work for me. Not a positive reply, but want you to know you're not alone! So confused about fluids and protein...who knows if I am getting enough?!? Hang in there!

Girl what are you confused about? Are you measuring? At this point you should be measuring every ounce you take in of fluids to make sure you get enough (64oz a day)

And 60 grams of Protein.

And give yourself time and patience. Your weight loss is on par to a lot if us.

I think that I may have had a day or two when I felt resentful of everyone else being able to eat when I couldn't but not really depressed. When I went to one of my pre-op counseling sessions, the leader there said that it is prefectly normal to mourn the food you are missing, it can make you feel depressed, it's like missing a part of your family. Let's face it, food is a huge part of daily life, and to most of us that are over-weight it fills in for a lot of other stuff. It's hard to let go of habits that are so ingrained, like eating when your stressed or angry. It makes you have to deal with the original emotions in stead of comforting ourselves with food. So I can understand the depression and feeling left-out while everyone is stuffing their faces. When I go out with my family now, I get my food, cut it in really small little pieces,(it lasts longer this way), and I talk, a lot more than I used to. Chin up, it does get better!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
