Dr. Gerald Kirshenbaum - Considering Dr. Kirshenbaum

Recommended Posts

Hello everybody,

Today was the BEST DAY! I met with Dr. K. for my consult. Felt like I already knew him and his staff from your comments and the picnic photos. Everyone was so very nice and professional. I am a "GO" for surgery 9/3 at 1:00 p.m. I am so delighted that it all worked out like I hoped it would. You know, as I wrote that big check, I did not have one moment of hesitation. I think this is one of the smartest ways I have ever spent a big chunk of money in my life.

My friend who is also a RN volunteered to pick me up after surgery and stay overnight with me at my house to be sure all is well.

So nice when things turn out just right!!!!!

Thanks everybody for your good wishes and support.

BTW, tofu tastes like whatever you put it in...it really absorbs sauces and spices.

Happy weekend!

To everyone who won the VISA cards at the BBQ we should have them next week and we will send them as soon as they arrive. Thanks.

Hello Lap-Banders

We want to thank everyone who came to the BBQ on Saturday. We enjoyed spending time with each of you outside of the office. For those who could not make it we missed all of you. I have created a short movie of the day. We wish all of our patient's much success so keep up the great work!

Well, I stopped taking all meds and really haven't had much problems. However, I went in Thursday to Dr. K's. Tom wanted to recal how much Fluid I actually had in my band. Nothing came out except a few drops, should have been more. So they said I need to have an upper GI Series done. Talk about freaking out. I do not want to loose my band. Of course I think of the worst case. But I just read all the posts about slippage and they aren't very positive.

I have not had restriction in several months because we had taken so much out. and I have gained weight and can't control my appetite. I really appreciate the band and I want my restriction back.

Fortunately I was able to schedule the procedure Monday morn. I don't know about you all but I hate procedures. Never had an upper GI, at least I don't have to do the cleansing like for colon.

So needless to say I am depressed, and ice cream is going down way too easy. my comfort food of choice.

I will keep you all posted. Dee and John I am so sorry I missed you at the picnic. I really really wanted to see you.

Does anyone want to do a Red Robin on the 12th? Or is there a better date? I have dog class on Wed til 7pm and another meeting on Thursdays, but I am willing to coordinate now that Dynamo is off in LALA land.

Marilyn

Yay Denver!!! I'm so glad that you liked Dr. K. and his staff. Aren't they the best? Wow, 9/3 will be here before you know it! This is the best thing ever. I just told my husband that I LOVE my lap band. I've not felt this confident about losing weight and getting healthy since . . . ever!!! You won't regret this one bit.

And, yes, tofu tastes like whatever you put it in. It's pretty versatile and really good. Give it a try, Bella!!

Bella I think for me after the surgery, going from such a huge restriction to starting to be able to eat again, was the biggest intake status change for me. I had my fill six weeks after my surgery. Can't remember the numbers, I don't really keep track of them as I'm more of a 'how does it feel' kinda gal. Tuning into your hunger, which is a challenge because our hunger button tends to be broke in the first place, is something I still work on. To feel FULL is different as I never really felt FULL FULL before I had the band.

Denver-enjoy the journey. Take lots of pictures NOW. You won't be sorry.

Sidann I feel the same way.

Dynamo Mini where are you?????? :cool2: Take a pause from love and check in or I'm calling you on the phone!

Anita and Mal - We have to have a reunion when I get to Denver next time. Let's make it happen. Think I will be there in late fall. My fill is spot on track and I'm riding the down train.

Purplelady... is our Marilyn in the office seeing a younger man or something? she is looking like a hottie these days? I looked at the awesome slideshow of the picnic and she looks fantastic!. New haircut, looking thinner too. The picnic looked like a blast. Great location. I'll be there next year with grandson in tow.

The picnic looked amazing. I know where that spot is as we passed it two visits ago and I took photos of it. I love Colorado and the beauty of that state. I remain awestruck at that place, the people, my medical team and the results of all of our efforts.

News on the weighloss front here for me:

Still going down and for the challenge my start is 293. My goal for this challenge is to see my back problem to a conclusion beginning Monday so that I CAN exercise without extreme pain and three days of bedrest. Did I say 23 pound? That would put me at 270.

All for now friends. Keep it going!

Aloha mi Banditos!

Mare~So sorry to hear about your band. Why do you think a slip?...are you having problems keeping foods and liquids down, do you have pain? How much was supposed to be in your band? Monday, let us know how things go, who is doing your prosedure? I'm sending positive thoughts your way.

Denver~Congrats on your date! We are so fortunate to have Dr. K and his staff in our neck of the woods. You will do well! I agree with Lap, take lots of pictures, I don't have many before pictures and the ones I have, I am wearing loose baggy clothes. I suggest take pics in your undies...you will love being able to see the difference without any hindering clothes. and, measure, you will appreciate the numbers when the scale stalls. I bought a journal and taped my before picture on the inside cover and keep track of my weight, measurements, fills, what I eat, I even have some RR pictures in it. Your journey will be here before you know it!

Lap~We MUST get together when you come back in town! Take care of your back.

Life~How is your training going? When is your event, I thought August???

Mini~Sounds like you and your band are getting along very well, don't ya' love it! How are the furry friends getting along?

I gotta run, actually walk...Buster!

Have a FAB day.

I saw this quote on someones signature and I LOVE it! "nothing happens if nothing happens" My new life quote!

Hi, all, back from vacation in Ashland, where we saw 3 great plays:smile2:, sat in the sun:biggrin2:, and started my 2-week preop diet:unsure:. Heck of a time to start a diet...300 miles from home in a town filled with great restaurants:thumbdown:..Oh, well, I prepared by taking several hard-boiled eggs for the mornings and slices of cheese and sugarfree Jello for Snacks. Ate steak and salad a lot. Mmmmm...

Glad to hear about new jobs, successful fills, haircuts that are "reborn" the day after, renewed flirtations:tt2:

Adorkable: I would like to amend my challenge numbers. Make the pounds 10 instead of 8 and the exercise 30 min. three times a week (everyday isn't realistic and I don't need the feeling of failure, ya know!). Am not wanting to put down a weight number just yet as mine is higher than everyone else's.

I leave a week from Tuesday for Denver. Gettin' kinda nervous:ohmy:..Can't believe it is really going to happen and that I am about to join the ranks of the Losers' Bench:thumbup:

Oh, I forgot to update on Tucker: He is doing better. His personality has returned, but his appetite not so much. Dr. Jeff is a little concerned as Tuck needs to get weight back up to get strength back: his hind quarters are still pretty weak.

Mal, how is Buster?

Mini, how are your new and old dogs getting along?

Forgot Tucker update: He is doing better. Personality has returned but appetite, not so much. Needs to eat to get his strength back but is not too cooperative. We just keep trying! But he is sooooo improved.

Mal: how is Buster?

Mini: how are your newbie and oldie doing?

Vacation sounded nice and job well done on the pre-op diet! you can do this...shrink that liver!

So happy to hear that Tucker is doing better, he is a strong dog and very fortunate to have a caring and loving mommy! I hope he gets his appetite back real soon. When Buster was sick he started with some strawberry Atkins shake, then he ate some deli chicken, he ended up eating all of my hubby's lunch meat! It is so sad to see them when they aren't felling like themselves. keep us posted on his recovery.

Buster is doing fantastic! He just finished some doggies ice cream and gave me a big "thank you" kiss! We went on our 3 mile walk this morning and he deserved a nice cold treat.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
