Hello everyone. i've been doing some planning since all of my preop insurance requirments are all coming together and i have a delima.

Im in nursing school and im planing my surgery in the of the middle semester and was wondering if i could possibly have surgery on our mid year break which is a week long.

i plan to go back to class the next week. Im not talking any major physical activity just sitting in class.

Does anyone think this would be unreasonable or unsafe? Missing anything more than two days is grounds for removal from the nursing program regardless of the reason so missing class is not an option so i wonder if i should put surgery off until i graduate which is a year away. I just really want to get the surgery and get on to the new healthier me but i dont want to make myself sick and i also dont want to jepordize my soon to be new career either.

With a job you can get a doc to write you a note, but (not knowing exactly where you are in your program) I have known of a WLS patient who could not finish his semester due to complications, and it created issues with his financing. Make sure you are covered so that if you did have to drop due to a medical complication you would be able to pick back up where you left off.

I've read about people going back to work just a few days after surgery, but if missing 2 days could result in dismissal from the program it would be kinda risky. You can't predict how you will feel after surgery, and minor/moderate post-op ills are relatively common during the first few weeks after surgery. If possible, I would recommend scheduling surgery during a longer break.

I have not had the surgery myself "until April 1st" but am talking with two freinds that have had it and also plan to return to work after one week of re-coop. They have both expressed that with a sedentary job/school it was very doable in fact they have done so also. As for complications oh wait that wasn't your question..

To you. I have to say IMO plan a time when you have a spring or summer break for healing time since you don't want to chance getting removed from nursing school. But you have to decide that one.

I got very tired after and was on pain medicine for a week. Everyone is different but my granddaughter is going to nursing school and they do not mess around. If something were to happen you would have to start over and the chance is not worth it. I say wait. You are young and try to do another diet in the mean time.

If everything goes well and you can have your surgery at the beginning of the week, it might be okay - many people go back to work a week after (some even less). However, not everyone is ready to go back so soon. Only you and your doctor can decide whether it's feasible for you. However, it seems to me that it's a pretty big risk if the two day rule is hard and fast. It's particularly a concern because, regardless of how necessary it is for us from a health perspective, this is still "elective" surgery, so you wouldn't even have the appeal that this was an emergency surgery that couldn't be put off.

As an alternative, it might be worth consulting with a bariatric surgeon and also confirm what your insurance requires you to do to have surgery. It may well be that you'll need to do 6 months or even a year of medically supervised diet, for example, in which case you could start that process while you wait for a better timeframe for the surgery.
