Has anyone read about the dangers of non organic soy products. It apparent slows down your thyroid and other things. I've been a vegetarian for 13+ years and my surgeon just took me off of thyroid meds. I have been avoiding non organic soy for about 6 mos. just wondering if this is something the vegetarian community here has talked about.

Why did you get taken off thyroid meds? I'm hypothyroid and will have to be on them for life. Is this related to soy or just two different things that you are sharing? I have heard the claims about soy in the past...asked my RD, who I really trust...and she said she doesn't believe it's an issue, especially for the amount that we can eat. With that said, whenever I can get a soy product (like tofu) in organic, I do. However, I thought it was the phytoestrogens that were the issue, and I don't think organic would make a difference?

My doctors believe that I was hypothyroid due to eating non organic soy from a young age and having it as a diet staple. My thyroid is now basically normal since I discontinued GMO/non organic soy. I don't have any great links for you on the matter but ill be sure to ask my docs for sources next time I see them.

What was your thyroid diagnosis? I know if you are hypothyroid like I am, you have to take a thyroid replacement for life (mine is secondary to a pituitary adenoma). I imagine it's possible that it could be reversed or that you were misdiagnosed as needing thyroid replacement initially, but I would tread carefully there. You might want to get a second opinion from another endocrinologist.

I choose to eat soy and gluten... I try to use non gmo whenever possible. YOu can find at Whole foods and some products at trader joes, and other health food stores. You need lots of Protein with the sleeve, especially when you are losing to keep from losing muscle. Some studies show that Soy fights breast cancer, cholesterol and some other problems. It's not the devil. I would perhaps keep it away from babies, and moderate its use with small children because of growth studies. Other protein sources have their own problems as well. I would think using a mix might be the answer. Eating low fat dairy and eggs in the mix will round things out . Nuts, Beans and wheat are high protein. Look for non GMO whenever possible. Fermented soy sidesteps some of its problems... such as miso, natto, soy sauce.

Everyone draws a line someplace. Perhaps you wont eat dog' date=' but cows are ok, perhaps you will only eat meat that comes from animals you have killed. Just like any other system, we each find our own boundaries...perhaps dictated by a clan or culture, or perhaps from personal conviction. Who cares what it is called really, names are just a way to generally show where you are coming from or your affiliation. Its made up.I have even heard of vegetarian palios! Some Vegans are militant. I can see their point. ONce you see the position we put animals in for our eating pleasure... its not as hard to go to this position.[/quote']

Great way to put this!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
