Started 'Couch to 5k today' Anyone keen?

Recommended Posts

I have three good sized titanium screws in my right hip and uncorrected displaysia in the left, so I know about hip pain... No fun at all and the clicking in my left hip is like nails on a chalkboard! Come on Laura...if my old booty can do it, you can!

Those sneaky devils... I just did week 5 night 2. I hopped on the treadmill expecting it to be the same as day 1, I didn't even look. I started to run and got a good rhythm going and focused on the music. I looked down expecting to see less than 2 minutes remaining and the clock read just under 5 minutes! WTH? I ran for 8 minutes before a walk break. So in case you're wondering, week 5 isn't the same every night like the earlier weeks are!

But, I did it!

Oh not to many people around with this!! How long have you had your pins? Mine were put in when I was still pretty young and one leg is a little shorter than the other. I thought it was weird when the extreme pain came on about 6 weeks out of surgery (sleeve) but the doctors don't see anything amiss and its starting to get better now.

I got a DVD by a guy who had a dozen surgeries on one leg. He basically shattered his femur. That leg is now 3" shorter than the other and looks like a franken-leg....and he runs marathons barefooted. I personally have 1 torn ACL and 2 torn meniscus (never repaired) and I ran my first 10K last weekend. It can be done if you start small and progress carefully and intelligently. Learn about good running form, it makes a world of difference.

Here's a good link... http://www.goodformrunningaz.com/

You can't develop that kind of form overnight, but since you're starting from the beginning you will do better to start with good form. By the time you're half way through with C25K it will be second nature and you will be leaving your hubster in the dust.

Since you live in sunny California I'd say treadmills are a no go. Get outside and do it. I started at the local track. That worked for a couple of months. Believe me the other people there will not be looking at you while you run because they are too busy panting and wheezing.

You know what? My daughter came home today and saw the app on my phone.. And she

#1 didn't make fun of me (which is a miracle with a 16 year old) and

# 2 she asked a few questions about it! So I ask do you want to help me with it, and she said yes!!!

And yes butter the weather is beautiful and we live close to my sons school, that has a track.

So watch out Saturday morning!!

Laura I would inquire about an orthotic to place in your shoe on the leg that is a lil shorter. Since you will be running you will want to even out so you don't pull muscles or injure ligaments. My daughter has to wear orthotics for foot pronation. If she runs without them she ends up hurting or with injuries.

Take it slow and yay for running!!!

I'm going to go get Dean to help me from the couch 2 my bed :P lol

I thought it was weird when the extreme pain came on about 6 weeks out of surgery (sleeve) but the doctors don't see anything amiss and its starting to get better now.

I had my right hip operated on in December 1999. I was training capoeira about 9 hours a week and thought I'd pulled a groin muscle or something at first. It felt like I had an ice pick jabbed in me. It got really bad and a chiropractor got my hip back in line so I could walk normally. Then the pain started radiating down into my knee and as far as my foot. I finally got into ortho but by then I was thinking knee problem but they took X-rays of my hips too. The dr I was seeing grabbed another guy as he passed down the hall and he glanced at my X-rays while having me walk or him. I turned back around and he already had the X-ray drawn up showing the severity of my displaysia and said I'd need surgery but he could fix it. NOT what I was expecting!

So I had me right hip fixed. It's a crazy surgery but is all my own bone and I still have three of the five screws that held me together while the bone grew and filled in the gaps they made moving things around. I was totally non-weight bearing for 12 weeks. He would have done my other hip and I just couldn't do it again when that hip didn't hurt, but I probably should have done it. I'll probably end up with a hip replacement on my left later on. For now I just put on my big girl panties and deal when the uncorrected side hurts.

Do they have a Wimp to 5k? I started yesterday and only made it through 10 minutes. My legs hurt all afternoon and this morning. But Wimps of the World unite! I shall wimp onward!!!

Just got an email back from my doctor and my nut. They encourage me to go for it( my husband will work out with me too) and the worse that will happen is that I walk the 5k instead of running it. I'm 66 so this should be a challenge because I HATE to exercise except Water aerobics because that doesn't hurt. Hit 50 pounds lost today and had my massage as a treat yesterday!! Go for it!

week 1 day 2 reboot in the book. I may just skip day 3 and start week 2. The layoff didn't hurt as bad as I thought. It seems to be going fine. Form is way off though. Need to work on upper body strength more. Geeze always something.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
