I was wondering if anyone knew someone who had undergone surgery at 500 pounds? I have a seminar Monday and a consultation Wednesday and I am just curious if they will even do surgery, or if I would have to lose weight. My highest was 520 on the 16th, then on the 21st I was 514, and I am hoping I will have lost more at my next weigh-in to prove I am dedicated. Also, what was their rate of loss? I am just getting really nervous for my consultation.

There certainly are docs out there who will work with you, just don't be discouraged if it takes a handful of calls to find him/her! Your stats and mine are quite close! It is excellent you are already on the weight loss road! That can only help. Good luck!

there is a guy in my support group. he started at a little over 600lbs. he had to lose 100 before they would sleeve him. he was just over 500 when he was sleeved. he just had his 1 year surgiversary and is a happy 380.

You just need a doctor that deals with high risk patients. (My surgeon said the higher your BMI the higher your risk is) I don't see why they wouldn't considering the sleeve was originally designed to be a first step surgery and after a patient lost a lot of weight they would operate again and convert the sleeve to a bypass. It sounded though like a lot of surgeons recommend the bypass for patients that have higher BMIs. At least my surgeon gave me that impression because you tend to lose more with the bypass (although the difference in percentages was minimal to me). Good luck with whatever you decide!

I am interested to watch your journey, and those of you who are over 500, my MIL is over 500, and I have inspired ehr to look into the sleeve. She is afraid she is too big for WLS, I think she just needs to find the right surgeon.

Thanks for you replies! I am getting nervous for my consultation Wednesday, I am hoping for good news. My insurance only requires the 6 month trial if you have a BMI lower than 50, so if I had to lose, it would be the surgeons decision.

VSG started out as step one of a two step procedure (the second step being RNY, usually) for patients who were otherwise too heavy to undergo traditional WLS, so generally being heavier isn't as much of a detriment as it would be otherwise. That said, the lower your weight is, the better it will be when your surgery date arrives.

Hi,

I started out at 511LBS and I am 7 weeks out from surgery.

I have had 1 doctor refuse to operate on me, but I found a doctor that would.

I had to lose at least 40LBS to 50LBS before surgery. This sounds impossible

when you first hear that you have to lose that weight on your own.

But for some reason it worked for me this time, I think the reason I was able

to lose the initial weight was I had a surgery date and I didn’t have time to

fool around. Surgery went very easy for me, the hardest part is getting in

all your Water and Protein that I need. So far I lost 125LBS and don’t miss food at

all. Good Luck and keep fighting your worth it.

No I did loose 125 in 7 weeks. the 125 comes from my pre op loss plus my post op loss.

this is about 50 pre op and the rest post op.

still it has been fairly fast, I was 511LBS on sept 1 of last year

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
