Did anyone NOT lose weight after surgery?

Recommended Posts

I was sleeved on 1/14. I lost 20 during pre op diet and then came home a day after surgery and had lost 14 more. Since then I lost two pounds but that's it. I know I should be super excited about what I did lose (and I am) but the neurotic side of me is trying to figure out how I'm not losing everyday when I'm eating. I'm on clear liquid diet and get to start Protein shakes again tomorrow.

Is this normal weight loss after surgery? I have this fear that this is all I'm going to ever lose.

1/14? As in 6 days ago?

Yes, I realize this may sound like a silly question but I guess I expected that I would be dropping weight very quick after surgery and then it would slow down.

boy... I felt the same... I hit a stall and actually GAINED 2 lbs... once I started watching my carbs and getting my fluids in, I dropped to the weight I am now...I understand that stalls happen and it's part of the process... I was also losing inches... and my clothes were fitting loosely even during the stall so I know SOMETHING was still happening... be patient, follow the plan and you will lose...and don't worry about what everyone else is losing... this journey is personal and your sleeve will do for you what you need it to do...don't lose heart!

Everyone is different but for me personally, I'm losing at the same rate I lost on any other diet. The upside is I won't gain it back this time! I didn't lose faster in the soft food stage and I think its unfair for a nutritionist to cause false expectations like that. If you don't lose faster in that stage, don't get discouraged! It will happen! The weight will come off! Good luck!

I was sleeved on 12/18 and I have/had the same fear! But I finally realized that I can only eat 2oz at a time so there is no way I won't lose weight unless I find a food that is 1000 calories an oz. I was eating about 4,000 a day. I am using my fitness pal and I can get to about 750 a day sometimes. About 3 days a week I don't even get to 500 because I forget to eat or I get too busy to eat. I had to set an alarm to remind me to eat so that is helping. I am making good choices and focusing on Protein and liquid. I stalled for two weeks after surgery. What a struggle! I was so sad but it broke a few days ago and I am on my way. You will be too as soon as your body decides to.

I was actually starting to think I made a mistake. I started to feel sorry for myself because I wasn't losing and I couldn't eat. Part of the overall probelm I guess. Of course I feel better now. I will be clear to do a full work out in a few weeks and that will make the weight loss faster and help with my mood and of course the shape of my body.

It will happen just keep up with what you are doing and you can't lose!

Ok,just as a bit of perspective.

I left the hospital 10 pounds heavier than the day of my surgery. At 10 days out those 10 pounds were gone.I have had several long stalls, ine which lasted 7 weeks.

But I have also lost 130 pounds in 10 months and am 3 pounds from goal.

What Im trying to say is rework your expectations sooner rahter than later or this process will be very difficult for you,and yes,I also thought I would be the one to lose fast and not stall...thought people were cheating..lol

Do what you have to do.Stay on plan.Dont focus on the scale. You will reach goal way faster than having unattainable expectations and the disappointment that goes with it that makes us fall off plan.

I also had the fear that I wouldnt lose more every time I didnt lose.I think it is kind of normal after many failed diets. But know that this is different.Just keep thinking with your head and not your emotions for a while at least.

I can guarantee you 3 things.

1.If you stay on plan and if are very honest about that, you will get to goal.

2.If you stay on plan and are like most of us,you will stall. You will doubt yourself and the sleeve but being on plan usually makes us realize there is nothing more you can do,just hang in there and wait it out.

3.If you relax and lower your expectations (as to how regular/fast the weight loss should be) this will be much easier for you than what it was for me...lol

Now,start thinking of the yummy food you'll be eating soon and good luck with your journey!

O,and stay off the scale.Weigh once a week only!

A7 week stall meant 35 times on the scale thinking my life was over....lol.Today I see the stress I loaded myself with and how silly it actually was.

I started at 339, day of surgery weight was 319. I have no idea how I lost 14 pounds in one day. Although when I typically start a diet I drop quickly and then stop which is why I guess I'm a little freaked out right now.

Thanks for all the support. I feel like I should throw my scale out because I know it's making me crazy.

You might be a fast loser or it may be slower, but after having 85% of your tummy removed, you WILL lose weight. Remember, the first yr is the honeymoon period, don't stray. Stay away from sweets, carbonated drinks (forever) and weigh and measure you food. I still do that and still keep an on line food log and I had surgery in June 2010. Good luck and enjoy the ride, a year from now you won't recognize YOU!!!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
