I'm 11 days post op and I am having a really hard time getting my Protein in. Can you give me any suggestions? I can't stand the taste of what I once enjoyed chocolate pure protein ready to drink shakes. Before the surgery I was on a pre op diet and I had to drink these shakes. I didn't mind them. Now, I can't stand them. I'm only drinking 5 oz a day. My husband has tried making shakes for me and those are even worse. I don't know what to do. Melissa

Just keep trying different types of Protein Shakes. I finally settled on EAS Advantedge Carb Control. I mix mine with Decaf coffee, frozen fruit, watered down with cinnamon and ice, Torani sugar free syrups. You just have to keep trying. And it will get much easier as time goes on and you can consume a little more at 1 time.

An easy one for me is Syntrax Nectar. I'll mix 1 scoop of fuzzy navel + 1packet of Oceanspray cran peach into 24-32 oz of Water. It's a really light drink that tastes great.

Carnation Instant SF shakes... AND I love this shake - gets in Protein, veggies and fruit :-)

beware - it makes alot - so I cut the recipe down as much as possible:

1/2 c frozen blueberries (I use fresh)

1c frozen strawberries

2 c frozen kale or spinach (I use fresh)

2 scoops vanilla Protein powder

2 c Water

Blend and enjoy!

The first 2 weeks were hard for me too. I felt like all I did was eat (or drink) my Protein all day. By far the best thing I found was the Unjury chicken Soup protein mix. I drank that 3-4 times a day and it was perfect. You mix it with Water so you are killing two birds with one stone- liquid and protein intake. Per serving of the soup it is 21 grams protein so if you do it 4xday you will be getting 84 grams protein and 32 oz water. The biggest thing for me was wrapping my head around the names of the Protein Drinks. Like if I bought one called oreo cookie- I had to constant remind myself "this is not gonna taste like Oreos an milk". Haha. I suppose that is part of their selling tactics. Hang in there and try to get the protein and liquid in. Some people will tell you that protein isn't as important right now but I (along with my surgical/bariatrics team) don't believe this. Your body uses massive amounts of protein to heal and of you aren't getting a good dose in everyday it will start to be pulled from your stores of it. Lean muscle mass, hair, bone density, skin collagen... Plus you will be amazed at how much better you will feel if you can get your protein in.

Another benefit of all the Protein is stronger nails. I never had strong nails, they would break and peel and never get any length to them. Now they are very strong and getting long.

My favorite Protein is unjury, not too keen on the vanilla, but enjoy all the others. Does the liquid such and almond milk that you mix it with count as part of your liquid intake? Or do you have to mix it with Water in order for it to count as part of you liquid?

I know you have a huge knowledge of Protein, it's ingredients and what to stay away from. :-) Have you heard if Ideal Protein? If so what's your opinion on it and is it a good choice?

Thank you so much!

My nut said that any liquid counts- milk, Water, crystal light, Decaf unsweetened tea... Anything not caffeinated or sweetened

I will start off by saying I have not had any personal experience with these products.

post-30418-13813662365767_thumb.jpg

However I found a few labels on the Internet, and unfortunately the first ingredient on all the labels I found is collagen.

Anybody that tries to sell this product as a health supplement either is completely ignorant as to what they are selling, or they don't care about your health and are only after your money. I tend to lean toward ignorance. I just don't believe most people would hurt other people for a bit of money.

Furthermore best I can tell, this is sold through franchised "clinics" that use their products exclusively. This leads me to believe the people operating these "clinics" are brainwashed into believing that these are premium health supplements worth a premium price. Quite the opposite. Collagen is used in the supplement market because it is dirt cheap.

Bottom line if it was given to me free, I wouldn't put it in my body.

Thank you so much. I saw it online and was wondering about it because I'm looking for a yummy Protein shake. I'm trying to prepare myself for an upcoming Pre-Op diet, as well as post. I appreciate it so much.

I am going to do some research on all types of Protein powder/premixed and head to my local GNC and start tasting! :-)

I enjoy reading all your posts, very informative!

If you are looking for something fruity, I'd really have to recommend Syntrax's nectar line. I mix anywhere from 1/2-1 scoop into 24oz of Water with a complimenting sugar free water flavoring & I think they taste pretty darn good, all things considered. Don't get me wrong, it's still Protein, so it's not going to taste like orange juice, but, I like it better than Sunny D.

Another vote for Syntrax Nectars. I like the Sweets and Unflavored, too. I am not a huge fan of the fruity shakes but I really do enjoy the natural peach mixed with orange Crystal Light.

Also consider mixing with Water, tea, coffee, juice, hemp milk, almond milk, soy milk, coconut milk or coconut Water, etc. to get a different taste/texture combo going. I can't mix with dairy. First of all, I'm lactose intolerant ;) but beyond that, it's too thick for my tastes. I only mix with coconut milk once in a while - it's really too thick for me, too.

Find samples online and keep trying until you find a Protein you like. It's a huge help in boosting your Protein levels and even at more than two years out I still drink one almost every day.

Thanks O.T.R, and Cheri!

Great idea about getting sample packs! I had no idea you could do that! What a great way to try something without wasting a whole tub if its not your taste. Let the ordering begin hahaha.

Thanks for the tips on what to mix it with. A lot of people tend to just mix it with milk (as I've been reading so far). I HATE milk but love cheese. Go figure ;-) I really like the tea and coconut milk idea.. Two of my current faves. I just really hope my tastes don't change too much and I won't like them post-op.

Thanks guys!

Sheena

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
