Dealing with cravings

Recommended Posts

Hello, I am fairly new onhere although I have been readng and lurking for about a monthor so.

I am due to have surgey on Jan 30. I don't have to do a liquid diet but I do have to do a pre-op class next Tuesday.

I was thin til I had my first baby in 1984. I was just out of high school when I go pregnant and for 6 mos I hid it from my family.

After they all found out in my 6th month I ate everything that was not nailed down. My Bf's mother had a veritable bakery in her house and every night it was cake, donuts, ice cream and I gave myself license to eat.

I was devastated when I was being discharged from the hospital and saw a scale and had only lost 10 pounds. I had gained 50!

So Al thru the years I kept that extra 40 lbs and when I met my husband, I put on more weight and wore a size 20 wedding gown :(

5 years later we had a baby and I really didnt gain that much but had a hip replacement in 202 and became very fond of the painkillers.

I used abused and misused painkillers after that for many years and finally got off them and clean in 06. So since 06 my new addiction is Ben and Jerry's Phish fod fro yo.

I gained an additional 20 pounds in these 7 years.

All that to ask. How do you deal with cravings after surgery? I have a ferocious sweet tooth at times and I know it is due to the med I take to replace the painkillers ( Its called Suboxone) Somtime after surgery I wanna go down and off this med but in the meantime how do you all handle the cravings after surgery? Will they subside after I have detoxed from sugar?

hanks ladies and gents.

Its weird whenever I post here my keyboard sticks lol

I hope this is the same for you but for the first couple months I had no appetite for anything- including my favorite foods. And I think it does help to withdraw from sweets completely- it really helps with the "over" craving. You have overcome many challenges in your life- I think you are going to do great.

Best of luck to you. I was a lurker here as well for several months before joining and posting a few times. I have a Jan 30th date also so we'll do this together! I do have a two week pre op requirement of clear fluids and 3-4 shakes a day and then 3 weeks of Clear Liquids post surgery. I have a feeling the preop liquids is going to be a lot tougher than the postop weeks! Post to the january sleevers also. There are a bunch of us on the 30th.

Just a suggestion.. I to was really carb and sugar addicted. About a year ago I read a book called an "anatomy of a food addict" it talked a lot about sugar addiction. I decided to stop eating all sugars real or fake. Getting off diet coke was the hardest. I feel lucky I did it then. before i even was thinking about surgery, cause I don't know if I could of done both at the same time!

I don't know when you start your pre op diet. But it might be worth a try just cutting out that one ingredient(s). To make the transition easy afterwards. You would be surprised how much food In America is made with sugars try finding bread at the grocery store without high fructose corn syrup! Even the healthy looking ones have it... Ezekiel bread is a good choice. Anyway don't diet just cut out that one thing if you can.

laura -ven, I dont think I will have to do a pre-op diet, unless they tell me on the 22nd to do it and that will only be 8 days. The surgery Coordinator told me due to my bmi I will not have to do a pre op diet but I guess we will find out Next Tuesday. Thanks for all the replies, you all are very sweer and helpful.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
