I think that they are afraid we might swallow it.

The gum thing is because chewing it allows you to swallow a lot of air and it would hurt. It is also because you might swallow it. I told my NUT pre-op: but what if I don't swallow it? And she said: you should just give it up or switch to mints.

I gave it up, but now I can chew it again. Just give your tummy a chance to heal up and get back to normal.

I chewed a piece today and was fine. They just dont want you to accidentally swallow the gum and have it result in damage to your new sleeve.
