Do you drink with your food?

Recommended Posts

I was just wondering if many others drink with their food. I do. Can you tell a difference as far as appetite when you DON'T?

Never ever drink fluids with your food drink 30 mins before and after having your food or the fluids flushes out your food and makes you feel hungry and you will end up eating more than what you actually need there are possibilities for your sleeve to be an failure if you continue the same!

Nope I do not. I will drink up until I eat but from that point on I will not drink anything for a half hour after eating.

Dr. said it wouldn't bother the sleeve it would just make me feel hungry sooner. I'm going to try not to drink when I eat but it seems when I do that my food feels all 'cloggy' in my stomach :(

I drink before meals, but have only had a drink with a meal a very, very few times. This is one of the most basic rules after vsg, so I comply. The few times that I did drink with my meal I found that I ate even less than I would without a drink and with eating so little in the first place I need the nutrition from food, not space filled with some liquid.< /p>

No I don't. Takes getting used to but you will. I don't want to risk anything.

No I don't. I was told this rule early on and used my few months waiting for approvals and all to practice it. I also had to learn to drink without a straw, to eat using infant cutlery, and to eat off small plates.

There have been a few times I took a small sip after the meal to cleanse my palate, but not actual drinking. Half an hour before and after.

It's one of those things I really wasn't in the habit of anyway. Maybe a few sips. I don't order a drink at restaurants cause most of it is wasted so I just get Water. I haven't been sleeved yet, but that rule was given to me at our first class when I started my diet. It's one of the easier restrictions I've been told I will have to live with.

Never and I thought I would miss it but really I have no space for liquid after I eat. Sometimes it takes 45 minutes to drink.

I'm going to try to do this religiously today and see if it makes a difference! I'm even setting the timer for 30min on my phone. Thanks for the help.

I don't make a point not to, but I just never did even before the surgery. However, if I need a sip or two I don't refrain.

drink with their food.

melinda48

oh no, oh no - don't do it - never drink with any food

people have been shot for less

ok, ok - nobodies ever been shot (I don't think) - but............

one of the first most basic rules with the sleeve is never, never, ever drink while you are eating

stop drinking 15-30 minutes before you eat

wait up to an hour after you eat, before you drink

the above drinking rules can be difficult to learn (they were for me)- but they must/need to be observed

practice these Water rules before surgery (11/2)

also drinking lots of liquids are mandatory - at least 64 oz

take care

good luck

speedy recovery

Someone said they put a shot glass of Water next to their plate because it made them feel more secure that if they felt "stuck" they could take a small sip...although they rarely/ never did. Might help if you're worried....I agree don't do it but having an emergency sip close by might put you at ease until it has become a comfortable habit.

No I don't drink when I eat...in fact it seems impossible for me to. I usually have Water available but I don't drink it...maybe just a sip if my mouth is dry. It is almost painful to drink and eat.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
