Nurse told me I am not losing enough?

Recommended Posts

I had surgery on Dec. 7 - just about 4 weeks ago. My total weight loss since the day of surgery is 22 pounds. There is no question that I hit a major stall at 2 1/2 weeks and the scale is barely budging. Things went really fast initially and then halted. I've battlled Constipation, taking Miralax and milk of magnesia and neither is currently working so they gave me a prescription today to "get things moving" (awesome!!). The nurse coordinator, who pretty much runs the bariatric program, told me that I should have lost more weight by now. I honestly don't know what else I can do. I'm walking and just started up at the gym. I'm definitely not eating more than 800 calories per day and I don't touch anything processed, refined sugar or flour AT ALL!!! I eat all high Protein, low carb foods. So, what the hell? I mean, I thought I was doing ok and this was normal to stall out. I feel like I just got punished or something but I am not doing anything wrong. My head is telling me I am a failure but at the same time, I am kind of pissed off at this nurse too. I just am not sure how I should be responding to this within, if that makes sense.

First, you should be applauded for not smacking her very hard. Even though they are in the medical profession, not everything they say is bible. I would find your zen place, take it in stride, and keep doing what you are doing. On what other "diet" or "program" have you lost 22 lbs in less than a month?? You are doing great. Don't lose sight of the big picture just because of one person's comments. You ROCK ON.

well i had surgery the 5th and have "only" lost 15 lbs. I think if you are doing all the right things, then the body is going to do what it wants, when it wants. All you can do is keep working the guidelines and know it will

come off. Perhaps some kickboxing of the nurse would have been a good workout. *halo*

Oh wow that nurse is rude. The sleeve is a LIFETIME change. She should not expect u to be dropping major amounts of weight so soon after surgery and plus everyone loses weight differently. This surgery is not a sprint and she has no right to berate u. As long as ur not gaining u r doing great!:)

You are doing fine. That nurse is referring to statistics and everyone is different. It's normal to stall out occasionally. Things will move right along, you are probably losing inches. I would recommend you ask for a different nurse or tell her to keep her negative comments to herself that you are following the program as you were told to. You should be really proud of yourself,,you've lost about 5 pounds a week! YOWZA! How can she think you aren't losing enough????...she's a quack.lol

That nurse is crazy! I just had my one month post-op and have lost 22 pounds as well. The dietician and surgeon said I did great. Perfect for someone with my starting weight. Forget about what that wacko said and be proud of yourself!!

Being constipated can definitely have a negative effect on your weight loss. Hopefully your prescription will kick in and get things moving and keep it that way. I bet that you will notice a big difference when it does.

I had surgery on December 6th and I have lost a total of 20 pounds - I stalled at 2 weeks, too - no weight loss (or weight gain) the whole week I started back on solid food...My husband says it is a marathon, not a sprint! RUDE NURSE!

WTH is wrong with some of the morons who work at these places???? Why the heck would she say something so ridiculously WRONG? I was sleeved 10 days after you (12/17), and I lost 14 lbs the 1st 2 weeks. I was told it was perfect and I was right on track. When I was weighed I was pretty much stalled, but when I switched to the pureed diet, I added some new foods and I seem to be losing again (SO much fluctuation during the day). Seriously, you cannot take that kind of idiotic assessment of your weightloss seriously. I don't care who told you. It's ridiculous. I bet once your Constipation is resolved, the scale will move back down. You're doing fantastic!

I only lost 16 pounds the first month - my doc said I was perfect. Yes, it wasn't as much as others, but a loss is a plus no matter the number. Every person loses differently. Don't be discouraged. Keep your head up. You are doing a great job.

My surgeon told me average loss per month for sleevers is 8 pounds. I think your doing fantastic!!

My surg nov 7 and down 40. He is very happy with my work so far. But I also adore him because he would give me sound advice if I was not doing well. That nurse needs another job!!

You are doing great!!!

Thanks everyone. This nurse is the main coordinator for the entire bariatric program. She pretty much runs the show. Other people from this program have mentioned they felt she was condescending and so they wouldn't go back for follow up visits. I can see why now.

On another note....constipation resolved (whew) and now sipping on a spinach, apricot, berry, and ground flaxseed strained shake. That should keep me on track!! Heading to the gym at lunchtime.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
