I am 66 and had surgery 5 weeks ago. I have lost a total of 33 lbs since the beginning of pre-op. Due to pain issues I am not able to exercise as many do. I can walk but it is very cold where I live and it would have to be in the house or the mall. I have gone to the mall numberous times but still can only walk a short distance and then I must sit down. I have only lost 1 lb in the last 2 weeks. It is very discouraging. I can not eat much. I try to drink all that is required but that is very hard also. Protein about 50 a day.

I would like to hear from others that are my age and how you are doing. Most people that post are 40 or less and don't have the problems older people have.

Thanks for posting this. I cancelled my surgery because of all the complications of younger people on this site. I figured if they had trouble then what's going to happen to an old fart like me. My surgeon told me to really think about it because of my age (59)). I've only been overweight for 2years.(due to psych meds) and he wants me to try losing on my own. I wanted to slap him. If I could lose it, why would I be in his office. I ramble. Please keep in touch. It's so good to hear from another wisened people.

Everyone has stalls . Don't get discouraged. You'll lose more weight. It's only been 5 weeks.

Just stay on track with what your doctor told you to eat, and you'll lose weight. You may not lose as fast as you would like, but this surgery will change your life.

I know how u feel. I will be 65 this month. I have had bilateral knee replacements 1 year ago. I was sleeved 10/10/12 and only lost 45 lbs including preop. I can't go jogging . What I do is Water aerobics 3 x a week and light weights daily. I can walk but not for long distances. I thought I would loose a lot more by now. The inches are comming off and clothes are getting bigger but I'm not getting the results I wanted I'm hungry, eat all my Protein and water and then some!

My wife and I both had WLS, she had a gastric bypass, I had the sleeve, She and I are both within 2 pounds of our goals, she is at 13 months, I am at 11 months out. I am 64 she is 61, We have both lost over 100 pounds since we started the program.

I did what exercise I could at the start of the program and turned it up as I felt better. There is no big hurry here, we have the rest of our lives. Now I exercise like an athlete; push-ups, knee bends with weights, running and walking with weights, bodyblade, stretchy tubes, kettlebells, and swimming.

I have stalled at 2 pounds over goal and my weight goes between 222 and 226 and back down again. I don't care about the stall, I am gaining muscle and losing fat. I am thinner and my clothes fit perfectly. I don't even have to wear a belt anymore.

The only problem I have with my wife is that she looks fabulous in everything she tries on at the store, a bit hard on the charge cards. Last night I got her 3 blouses that she looked stunning in, luckily we were at Ross's and not Sach's.

Walking is a great exercise but not the only effective one. Upper body exercises can be done even sitting. Do what you can do and increase as you can. When more weight comes off it will get easier.

Your surgeon is a jerk!!! I would find another surgeon. I was sleeved this past July 2012, at the age of 59. I've lost 84lbs., since my surgery, plus 16lbs preop, for 100lbs loss. Neither my surgeon, or other physicians said anything about my age! They just wanted me to have the surgery asap! I start the gym next month and will be doing Water aeorbics, strength/toning (weights). My health is so much better and I'm moving/walking so much better. I have severe bilateral osteoarthritis in both knees, so I want as much weight off as possible before knee replacement time!!! I just wish I had my sleeve done in 2011, but, I chickened out. Don't think I was mentally ready. Looking forward to celebrating my 60th, 100+lbs lighter in March!

Thanks for the positive response. I have a "huge" hiatal hernia that the surgeon says will be my only pain. How long was your recovery

Hi! I was only on pain meds about 4 days and then Tylenol for rest of the week until my drain was taken out. Started going to the gym about 3 weeks and cleared for strengthening about 5.

If you get stuck and feel stalled, it's just your body getting used to it's new weight. After

it adjusts, it will be willing to give up weight again. Just stay on track and know that it's going to take time, but the pounds will come off!

I'm 64 and was sleeved on 12/12. I had no complications, had the surgery in the morning and went home the next afternoon. No drain and no need for pain meds except at night for a couple of nights - just so I would sleep well.

I didn't have any problems swallowing my meds and didn't need to crush any of them. I did the liquid phase for 10 days and moved to a soft diet for another 5-6 days. I am now on a relatively 'normal' diet - meaning Protein and some vegetables. Try to drink my liquids (thankful for Crystal Light!) and have at least one Protein Drink a day. Quantity isn't much but I'm not hungry and that is good!

I've lost 20 pounds since surgery. However, I have edema in my lower legs and I've gained Water weight since surgery. I've got an appointment with a lymphology clinic this week to see how I can help with it. I am congnizant of salt and don't use any at the table. I also have bad knees which don't allow me to do a lot of moving and some days are better than others. I'm hoping the edema treatment will help me to walk more.

Overall, I would say I'm far happier than I would be if I had not had the surgery. I would definitely do it all over again. We are all different. My surgeon said my window of opportunity is really through the next 8-9 months and then it will get harder to lose. We'll see but I intend to make the most of the window I have!

Best to all of you on your journey!

That's ridiculous. When I asked my surgeon if 59 was too old, he sincerely and emphatically answered, "NO!!!" Find another surgeon. And I too had a hiatal hernia repaired, and I was NOT in a great deal of pain, just discomfort. The only true pain I had was the blasted gas pain in the shoulder.

And I have had great success with this surgery at the age of 59.

The best part of being older when having the surgery is you are most likely doing it for the right reason - health.

I love the vitality of the young people of this site but somewhat annoyed with the obsession of wearing sexy clothes in a size 2 - it is about a lifestyle change and concern for good health; I am thrilled to be wearing a size 12/14.

Life is so much easier for me now - how about you?

I just turned 66 last week, and am 2 months post op. Also had hiatal hernia and gall bladder surgery. I try and walk 30 minutes a day, but feet and knee hurt without the Celebrex. Am adjusting to that. Will go back to Water aerobics soon. I have problems getting all my liquids in and still get sick occasionally. Now can add some more foods, but have only tried a couple of things as I still have problems with getting sick. I have lost 31 pounds so am pleased with that. Try and go a little further each day. I started out only walking less than a block. Good luck! we can do this!

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
