I have to know, does the hunger/appetite REALLY disappear?

Recommended Posts

This is one of my biggest fears. That I will still have my enormous appetite and be hungry. I've heard of people who have said they still deal with the intense hunger after surgery. My surgeon says my appetite will be gone, but is that really the truth?

Early on you will be hungry. Mostly it is mental and some gas. After a bit it goes away mostly, and you won't be hungry a lot. I get that "hungry" feeling every so often, but honestly there are big chunks of the day, I forget to eat. You won't have an appetite and even if you did, you won't have capacity. My Dr. is pounding on me because it has caused my weight-loss to stall, so now, I have timer set on my phone to eat something about every 2 hours....

Yes, I don't feel hunger nearly the way I used to. I could go most of the day at work and forget to eat if I didn't force myself to remember. I promise you, that NEVER happened before.

I do still feel hunger pangs - mostly in the evenings, which was my "danger" time pre-sleeve. But it's not an every day thing and it passes very quickly.

I too am having the hunger thing.. and Im 5 days out of surgery.. Im told too that it will diappear.. I hope too that it does soon.. I dont like feeling that.. makes me want to eat things I shouldnt have.. but I do eat.. and I cant eat much. seems to curb the feeling.. but I really want that to go away.. Im told to be patient and it will. So im gonna be patient..and wait..and deal with the hunger.. or head hunger..

I am five days out. I'm not hungry at all. Do I want to eat? Yes. Just like I wanted to eat before the surgery. But I'm not hungry.

I am out 2 months and I still feel hunger. I wake up and my tummy is growling!! But conversely I am not doing a good job at ensuring I eat when I need to!!! Double edge sword!!! Yes I am frustrated and I know I am stalling because I am not eating properly!

I think it's individual. I am almost 7 months out and have hunger, sometimes its downright ravenous hunger. I think it was only the 1st month after surgery that I didn't have any hunger at all.

For me I don't get hungry, but I get an empty feeling and I know I should eat. Because it's 'empty' and not 'hungry' I find I have control over it and can choose better food and even wait until I can eat well.

This would never have happened pre op. I'd have ravenous hunger "I need to eat and I need to eat now!!" type hunger which would make me often pre occupied with eating. Not anymore.

I am about 5 months out and No I don't get hungry but I do have a sense of an empty feeling stomach....and when that happens its usually about the time I need to eat. In the beginning I dealt with "head" hunger but as time has past I am dealing with that better. Its not an issue really. Its part of the journey.

I'm 12+ weeks out. I felt a lot of hunger at first, but it was mostly stomach acid. Now I try to eat when I'm hungry. Sometimes that doesn't happen until late in the day. I have to make sure I eat, and get in my Protein. Some days I don't even feel like eating at all. It is more about health and nutrition than about feeding my face.

I am 9 days out and I get a hungry feeling and it sucks but it may just be a pain in my stomach that feels like hunger because I have this feeling randomly sometimes I have it a few minutes after I eat. Weird. I hope it goes away.

I'm out over 2 years and the PHYSICAL hunger is still gone, when I get "really" hungry I amd just the slight bit peckish, just a tiny bit of stomach emptyness, nothing like pre-op. That being said I am now having more of an issue with psych hunger, the holidays, being bored at work and stressed out, reduced sunshine due to time and not enough good weather to bike I find I want to snack even though I am NOT hungry and don't want to eat and eating makes me bloated and uncomfortable. I've gained about 5 pounds and am going to work extra hard in the New Year to lose them again, being 5 pounds over weight is a LOT different than being 200 pounds over.

I am 7 weeks out and I do not get hungry. I asked the DR. about it. He said 50% of the people lose their hunger completely. My story is just like Deano. I was hungry all the time. I would wait until the house was quiet and everyone was asleep and then eat all the no no foods.

I never thought the day would come and I would be FREE from Food! It is here. I do eat as suggested to avoid any problems. However, I get full sometimes before finishing all the food. I do not eat past full. Trust me I never thought that eating 1 oz of meat and 1/4 cup of veggies would fill me to full!!! The sleeve is working!!

When I get bored and think I need a snack..I mix up a Protein shake...that seems to help.

I am 3 wks out today and some days my hunger is worse than others. I still crave things I use to eat, like pizza, but I know I just can't have it. It's different from regular dieting, before I would break down and eat 2-3 slices. I know thats impossible now so I just get over it.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
