Parvathi - do you mind me asking why you changed surgeons? What is revision surgery?

Simple answer - I'm picky. I "interviewed" 3 surgeons before deciding on one. I had scheduled four consults, but after the third one I knew I had found my man lol. The first two surgeons I saw, were very easy to talk to, didn't require me to "jump through hoops" and didn't require a pre-op diet. They made it sound easy as pie, which of course, in a way you want it to be.

Then I saw Mr. Crosthwaite. Whilst he wasn't the most personable man in the world, he seemed more than competant. He explained the pros and cons in detail. He told me why he went into this line of work. He told me that he'd prefer if I saw a therapist, that I MUST exercise and that I'd be required to do a pre op diet. And he explained why all of that had to be done. While it made it a bit harder to do, in the long run, I felt there was a reason behind it and it was for my own benefit.

I'm not saying Mr. Nottle isn't a good surgeon. I'm sure he is and I've heard nothing but good things about his work. I guess I just needed something different.

A revision surgery, in my case, is where they go in and replace the band with a new one. Mine slipped a few months back. I paid nothing out of pocket to have it replaced.

Hi, like Jess my surgeon is Mr Crosthwaite. I have found him to be very thorough and professional. He explains everything clearly and everything he requires is always in the best interests of his patients. I have found him to be both ethical and personable.

Everyone has to make a decision regarding their surgeon, based on the criteria that is important to them. Good luck with it. Susannah

Hi Bronnie, Well looks like we are both born in 1970 and both have MS! I had quite a severe attack last Feb, but it has gone back into its box again. Yay! I am hoping to have a long period of remission with it. I can only handle one thing at a time, namely the banding. Although those of us with MS know that the disease goes on in the body, even when you are in remission.

Hey Bronnie I forgot to ask you if this is your first consult with Mr Nottle. Have you had all the other tests that you have to have, namely blood tests, respiratory tests etc etc?

I first considered having this surgery in 2003, after my neurologist referred me to the specialist for it. I left it until july 2006. Had talk with my GP about it again who referred me to my surgeon. Had first consult on October, and lots of tests. Second consult with surgeon in December, and surgery in Feb.

You also will need clearance from your neurologist, which should not really be a problem as MS eventually effects mobility. I am not ready for that yet!

Good luck. Susannah

Hi...

seeing my neurologist tomorrow afternoon so will get a clearance from him. I doubt that will be a problem. This will be my first visit to Dr Nottle on 14/2/07 so i havernt had any tests at all. Im going through my private health insurance so hopefully i wont have too long a wait. Im a bit nervous as i had my gallbladder out in 2000 and was quite sick afterwards. I felt like i was full of gas for days and couldnt get rid of it... not nice... hopefully that was a one off experience with a laproscopic procedure.

so... when is your operation?? Im hopeing Dr Nottle says he can do it by the end of March. Since diagnosed with MS ive put on heaps of weight. Im relatively mobile with only a bit of numbness in hands and feet but i do get tired.

take care

Bronwyn

Hi Bronnie, Good on ya! I am being banded on Feb 2nd. I had my gallbladder out in an open procedure as a 15 year old. Yowzer! I was a month recovering from that.

Where are you being banded? I am being done @ The Avenue hospital.

Hi Bronnie - I was banded by Mr Nottle on 12th Dec. More than happy with him, he is very efficient. I originally was seeing another surgeon, but couldnt get a surgery date, it took ages to get my first appt, then 7 weeks to go back, then it was going to be nearly 3 months for surgery. I was self funded and didnt want to have to wait.

So I rang Mr Nottles rooms and they fit me in for the initial appt with him and pencilled me in for surgery at the same time 2 weeks after that. This of course was depending on everything being okay!

You normally have to see a physician & dietitian after seeing him, but as I had already done that I got through a bit quicker.

I asked him about the procedures, about the failures, and why. he was great, and said in my case I can expect great results.

Im not sure which hospital i'll have the procedure. Maybe Werribee Mercy or Western Private.

Originally i was suppose to see Dr Nottle on 2/10/06 for a first visit. Silly me cancelled the appointment as i wanted one last attempt to lose weight myself....mmmm.... ive put on 4kg since then.

I just cant wait...... i can picture myself as a much thinner me and it will be great not to break out in a sweat when cutting my toenails. Definately a task i have difficulty doing.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
