I am a bit nervous to broach the topic of WLS in mexico with my PCP. How did you guys do it? Did you tell them beforehand? or wait until after surgery? can they decline to care for you?

I would mention it beforehand because I know a few people whose Dr's wouldn't treat them afterwards because they were worried about malpractice; plus some PCPs aren't familiar with WLS and don't know what prescriptions, etc. are allowed, which is another reason they will refuse to treat you. My own Dr. told me her friend had lapband and then her surgeon retired; now she can't find anyone who will touch her.

I am not telling my PCP or ob/gyn. They will find out the next time they see me.

you should definitely tell your pcp to make sure he/he will still provide care after surgery. your pcp can refuse care since you are going to mexico.

I am afraid he will try to talk me out of it and I am changing docs in January anyway. :)

I spoke to my PCP beforehand and explained everything to her and she agreed to treat me afterwards. I actually went yesterday to see her and she said I was "Brave" and that she should recommend people to go to Mexico if they can't afford it here in the US :)

nervous to broach the topic of WLS in Mexico with my PCP.

fletcherette

i approached my PCP a couple of years ago and asked his opinion of me having WLS. i was pleasantly shocked and amazed that he approved so quickly

he was happy for me and immediately we spoke about the health benefits

reaction from PCP might be different since WLS will be in Mexico

IMO - you should tell PCP you we be having WLS in Mexico - give the guy a chance - he might be all for it, then you can share thoughts together concerning the surgery - then you could discuss your aftercare

if you chose not to tell him - i kindof think doctor might not appreciate you not being upfront with him - telling him "you weren't sure what his reaction would be" a statement like that - might not be appreciated by dr

home from mexico - you need to see him ( dr) and say "oh by the way i just returned from Mexico for WLS) IMO that doesn't come off well

if your dr is against treating treating/helping you PO - which i think is his right, just as its your right not to go to a certain dr.

you should know his thoughts ahead of time before WLS - you can find another PCP, telling (new prospective dr) about your upcoming WLS - and need to make sure he will "watch over" you help needed PO

Don't let present PCP intimidate you!!!!

good luck

speedy recovery

I told my PCP and I am glad I did. She insisted on running a full blood panel and found out I was severely anemic. I faxed the lab results to Dr.Perez in Cancun and he said I could avoid a transfusion if I got a Iron iV soon. And that is exactly what I did.

But really. You will feel much better having a supportive Dr for follow up care. If your PCP is not on board than you may need to find one that is, and preferably before you go.

I told my pcp. She feels I'm making the best decision for my health and is supporting me. She agreed to continue seeing me afterwards.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
